IMPnovEMsMT IM EXTENSION-LADDER.
@Ligt rhlmglt nieren in iu tigen tittu `utuu animating pnt 'nfl tip nur.
To :ALL wHoM IT MAY ooNoERN; l
Be it known that I, HsEA BARNS, of Somers, in. the county QtKenoha, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and improved Extension-Ladder; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings hereinafter' referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the'same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire te have secured to me by Letters Patent. t
4This invention consists in connecting together lseveral sections or lengths of ladder, (three, more or less,)
in such a manner that the sections may be rigidly connected so as to form one continuous length when required, and admit of the lengths being folded when not required for use, and4 also adjusted so as to form a step-ladder when required. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure '.l'is an elevation oi my invention-extended at full length for use.
Figure 2, a side sectional view of the same, taken in the line x x, fig. 1
'Similar letters .of reference indicate like parts. A B C represent the three sections or lengths of the ladder, A being the lowest or iirst section, B the second,
and C the third er uppermost section. The lower ends of the side pieces a a of the sections B and C are notched,
as shown at Za b in fig. 2, and these sections are connected together by having the rounds e of the sections A and4 B pass through oblong slots d in' the lower parts of the side pieces ofB and C, said slots admitting of the notches b being tted on the rounds e below c, as shown in iig. The parts B C have hooks D attached to their side pieces a, one or both of them, and at such points as to admit of the hooks being adjusted over the rounds c e. These hooks, when thus adjusted, prevent the sections B C being raised, andthe notches b b therefore cannot pass o'i andbe free fromA the rounds c, and the sections A. B C will consequently be rigidly connected together and form a continuous ladderequally as strong and firm as one made in a single length or piece. By detaching the hooks D from the rounds a, the sections or lengths may be folded over and adjustedin the form of a' triangleto constitute a step-ladder.
I do not claim broadly a folding ladder, or one made in sections co'nnected by joints, for they have been previously used; but
I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The hooks D, attached to the side pieces a of the sections or lengthsB C, when` the latter are connected together by the rounds c passing through oblong slots d in theside pieces @and the lower ends of the latter are provided with notches b, to t over rounds e, all arranged in the manner' substantially as shown and described. v
HosEA BARN's.
