IMPROVEMENT IN PLhNING-MAGHINES FOR WOOD.
2O ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, GEORGE B. DURKEE und WILLIAM II MURRAY, both of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Planing and .Wood-Moulding'Machines; and we do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation'of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a port oi' this specification, in Which-f- Figure l is a side` view..

Back of this erm is another crm, g, fitting into a slot made in the erm ,0, and having nlug attached .to it iittng the slot a, so that it will'slide up and down with C. The screw G is attached tothe arm o r berg by a head on the end of the screw, or by a swivel-joint. By this means the lateral out of the cutter heads is adjusted, so that one can be mede to cut directly in front yor rear of the other, or changed so as tokcut in di'erent places. I v l We make our cutterdheads E, l'with their journals, of a single piece of steel, so that there .is no getting out of order, slipping, or yielding. l.ihey revolve'in boxes, the lower half of which We cest with and upon the arms of the cross-head C.` Thefupper hait of the boxes is detachable, end' is held in pleee and adjusted by the screws b passing through the projection c. By removing the upper haif'of' the box the cutter-heads con be removed and changed at pleasure. The cutter-heads arel square, and are provided on each side with a T-sheped groove or cavity, provided with the additional groove or slot it, as shown in iig. '3. We place the nuts of the knife-bolts in this T-shaped groove instead of externally,.as has been heretoforedone.; und the advantages of i this arrangement are thnt we can use a larger nut inthe groove, so that the bearing is always secure; and, as

The groove or slot c admits ofthe passage of the bolts entirely through the nuts, so that their full strength can he obtained without any nice adjustments in the length of the bolts. 4 y
Four knives or cuttersvcan be used on each cutter-head; but for monldings where a rapid feed is notessential., one to each head will be found sufficient. The form ofthe knivesmust be adapted to the style of moulding desired; and by the use of two cutter-heads u. much greater variety can bo produced with ongles cut under, and with deeper grooves, as one knife can be made to do n. portion of the cutting, which will be finished by the one which follows; so that deep-end line grooves coin be made without long points on the cutters, which are diiicult to keep in order and liable to break. Great ndvanttgc will also be found in ordinary planing, as, by taking oif the rough and gritty or dirtyportions, and reducing the boards to an even thickness by the first cutter, it cri-n be followed by the second with n high motion and very sharp knives, which will give the boards a perfect finish and polish; and with mouldings, and in planing siding, a `bevelled odge cnn be given.
Having thus fully described our machine, whn-t we claim as new and as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy i 1. The employment of two separately adjustable eutteiheads in a single machine, so'thut the axis of one cutter may be at one angle and the other at a. different angle, und both cutters operating at the same time upon the same board, substantially as specifiedn 2.
