TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONGERN Be it known that I, BENJAMIN S. BENSON, of Baitimore, in the county of Baltimore, anti State of Mar; land, have mented a new nnd useful Improvement in Casting Metallic Pipes; and I do hereby declare the fo lowing to be a full, clear, and exact deseription of the'same, reference being had to the accompanyiug drawini frming part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a dtaehed view of the anchor used in casting ancl mouiding pipes, which forms th subject of my impxovement, aud
Fgure 2 is a. view of the same when in position in the niouid.
This invention consists in the use of an anchor, of improved form and contruction, which does not scratcl 01 weer the mould.
In casting or moulding metaliie pipes of considerable iength, it has always been very difiicult to prevem the middle portion of the core fromidefleeting insome degree from a. perfectiy straight iine, zuid theieby making It is obvious that uniess the waiis of the pipc are of uniform thickness its usefuiness for many purposes will be destroyed, and its durabiiity wiil aiwa.ys he Tocompensate for sueh ineguality in the thieknes's ef the pipe, moulders have alwnys been obiiged to make the whole p1pe thicker than would otherwise have-been necessary, thereby consunzing more materizti, und produeing 'an a1ticle heavy ancl eumbersome oi handling. T0 obvinte this practical diflcuity in the manutnc" ture, I invented en anehor or stay for confining the core in the centre of the mould, upon which Letters Patent were granted to me, deted February 17, 1863, No. 37,670. It has been found, in the experience of several years manufacture, that the device then patented sometimes Scratches and injliies the nner surfaoe of the mouids. It-is to obviate this difficuity, and perfect that device, that the inventiou has been made which forma the subject of this appiication, andwhioh will now be more particulariy described.
In the drawings, M M represent the wulls of the mould, and 0 the core, in positon fox Casting; A, fi g, 2, indieates the anchor surrounding the core in the mould, tand holding ts externl wails equdistant on uil sides from the nternai waiis' of the mouid. The construction of this improvednnchor is cleariy shown in fig. 1, in which a indicatesa hoop of wire, having'its ends twisted 01 hooked together, and supporting three or more npright donbie piates, e e, oftin, tinned sheet iron, or-otler suitable metal, which are soidered or simply swaged to the wire, so as not to become detahed from it. "These pistes a're narrow, and about two inches in lengtb, terminatng at their upper extremity in slightiy expanded disks, e e", parallel to end facingeach-other, one of the disks supporting a stout pin or bolt, 2', n hicli projeets from it towards the other, the extremity of the bolt bozning against the centre of the opposite disk when in position in the mould. The plates e e consist simply of u. strip of tin of the required dmensions, doubled near its centre around the wre hoop, anti having a. half inch oi the end to which the bolt is attached doubled i.nward for the bolt to pass through, the head of the held between the doubled parts, anti the iatter being firmiy soldered 01 pressed tog ther.
these plates as thus described is shown cleariy on the left side of fig. 1 of the drawings. the inner disk e", and is held i bolt being The construetion of The core rests against n position by the beits Zl, which stzmd firmly between t and the wgtlls of the as wiil be ob;served. No part of the instrument is designed to come in contact with the mould except the smooth outer surface of the out er piate e'and its disk e, which entirely prevent the scratching or injuring of the mouid whiie the instrument is being introduced.
' g thus de=eribed myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
consisting of the wire hoop a, the doubled pistes e e, and the beits zz',
