LEANDER MUDGE', 0F SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 71,50-11, dated November 26, 1867.
IMPROVED BED-BOTTOM.
@in Stimuli finden it in time ldters 33mm zint uniting pmt nf tige sima.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY' C'ONCERN;
Be it known that I, LEANDER MUDGE, of Springfield, in the county of Clark, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Bottoms; and I do herebyr declare' that the following is a full, clear, and exact .description oi' the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plane view.
Figure 2 is a transverse section.
The same letters are employed in both figures in the indication oi' the same parts.
My improvement consists in the' substitution oia small cord, arranged and sustained as hereinafter described, in place of the slats of Wood and various other, devices used in bed-bottoms, for the purpose of making a cheap and comfortable bed. i
Iattaeh and sustain the cord to a frame oi' the proper size and shape for a bed, commencing at one end of the bed, on the side rail of the frame. I first fasten a spring of coiled wire, to whiehis attached the first end of the cord, which is carried across the frame from' side to side at short intervals, and extending the entire length of the same, sustained by sheaves or grooved pulleys, turning easily on -bolts or pins attached to the frame, and connecting the other end with a wheel and axis, by which the cord may be tightened.
The following description will enable those skilled in the art to apply my improvements.
In the drawings, A represents part of the frame of the bed-bottorn, being the end and side rails thereof. The cord Gr is attached to a spiral spring, fastened at one end of the side rails, and it is passed across from side to side, as-shown ing. 1, passing around grooved sheaves B like those of a pulley, turning freely upon a pin, by which they are fastened to the rails. The other end of the cord is fastened to an axle, D, which is attached to a brace, A', and'whicli is turned by the wheel E, or by a wrench or crank, for the purpose of tightening the cord as required. A ratchet-wheel, F, attached to the axle-wheel, in combihation with the pawl Fl and spring F2, holds the axle in position, preventing it from unwinding the cord when it has been wound around .the axle. The cord, moving freely over the sheaves B, may be tightened at will by the use of the wheel and axle, andthe spring G gives elasticity to the bed-bottom, and relieves the cord from the strain of sudden shocks.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bed-bottom, constructed with a small cord, G., traversing the space between the side rails, passingraround vpulleys B, attached to the latter at close intervals, and connected at one end to the bedstead, or to a spring, C, and at the other to a tightening-axle, D, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEANDER MUDGE.
