IMPROVED PNEUMATIG SPRING.
Etc fislgztule meet it in flgese fitters fitted tarnishing and at flge smut.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CQNGERN:
Be it known that I, W. ,A. DRIPPS, of Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pneumatic Springs; and I do herebydeelare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
This invention consists in confining compressed airin a chamber, and thereby taking advantage of its elastic character for forming springs for various purposes, as will be hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents a central vertical section of the spring through the line a: x of fig. 2, and
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the same, through the line y y of fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a shell, which contains a cylinder and an air-chamber. B is the cylinder, and G is the a.. chamber. D is a piston which works in the cylinderB. This piston is packed by packing-rings, the same as the pistons of steam-cylinders. In this example of my invention thereare three packing-rings within the groove of the piston-head, as seen in the drawingf Behind the inner ring there is an annular chamber, a. The rings are marked 0, cl, and e. Communicating with the chamber at, from the bottom ofthe piston, there are small apertures f. Both cylinder. and the air-chamber C containI-oil or other liquid up to or about to the line marked 9. The chamber O is filled with compressed air, of any required density, through the small cock 7:, which -is connected with a force-pump for that purpose. 1) 'is a piston-rod, which passes up through the cap or cylinder-head J. The end'of this red receives the weight which is applied to the spring. When the piston is forced down the oil or other liquid will be forced up into the chamber G, through the aperture L. The air thereby becomes compressed, and its density increased in proportion to the quantity of oil which is displaced or forced from the cylinder B. m is an offset in the cylinder to prevent the piston from descending below that point. The cylinder-head J'prevcnts it from flying from the cylinder by any sudden rebound or diminution of pressure.
When the piston descends, the oil or other liquid will enter the piston through the apcrturcsf, and thereby expand the packing-rings, and preventing any leakage of oil or other liquid past the piston.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- p The construction of the pneumatic spring, consisting of the case A, and having an eccentric cylinder, B,
and cover J, said cylinder containing the piston D, having the rings a ale, and perforated upon its underside atf, and providedwith the rod passing through the cover J, as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
