Description
@auch tattgstwt @fitta IMPROVEMENT IN SAWING MACHINES.I
alge Strata nient tu inibire @was atmt :mh nmtiug'gntt nt tte smut.
TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN: i l
Be it known that I, G. L. MOWBY, of Scott, in the county of Cortland, and in the State of New York,Y have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Sawing Machines; and do hereby declare that the fol- .lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification'. In the annexed drawings Figure 1 represents a side view,
Figure 2 a cross-section, and
Figure 3 a plan view of the movable table, with its levers shown in red lines.
A represents the frame of the machine, which is composed of a series' of uprights, suitably stayed together, and provided with a covering or'top, A. At one side of this frame, near its longitudinal centre, is a vertical shaft, D, having an arm, B', extending near midway the frame, as seen in fig. 2. To this arm is connected the saw, which works in a vertical manner. F represents a large cogwheel, secured `upon a shaft in the frame A,
and which meshes into a small cog-wheel, G, upon the end of the crank-shaft J. This shaft J is provided with"v a balancc-wheel, II, and operates the pitman I, which is connected, by means of a small stud,j, to the sawframe.
It will be seen that this saw-frame D is made in the form of a bow, and'has its back against the upright B. Upon the upper and lower ends of this bow, as well as the back, there is a small thimble, e e, which encircles a roches, upon the arm B', shaft B, anda similar one on the lower part of the frame A. By means ot' the above connec tions of the bow, with its saw, to the frame, the same is worked for sawing the lumber. C represents the movable Wtable.. '.lhis table lies upon the top A, in front of the saw E, and is provided with two'or more sets of clamps,
a a c a, which secure the wood or lumber.Y These clamps are each composed of two vertical plates, with teeth formed on their inner edges, the plates a a being stationary, while the plates ata are movable in slots 4in the table by means of a lever, m, connected to a sliding bar, n, which forces plates a.up against or oil' from their corresponding plates a a. i
Bythis simple device the wood, when placed therein, is held securely, and accommodates itself to the clamp. For instance, if a piece of Wood'is placed in the clamps, with one end double the size of its other end, the clamps by their adjustability securely hold the timber. The movable'table Gis intended. for forcing the wood against the saw as it is cut thereby'. Crossing underneath this table, at its centre, is a rod, c, which is pivoted to a lever, 71., upon the top A, and which either carries or draws the table to or from the saw.
My invention is intended for sawing the various kinds of wood, such as plank, felloes, crooked lumber, or ordinary lire-wood, and canY readily be adapted foreither. By unscrewing the pivot :e of the lever L, and uncatching the rod lc from thetable, thesaid table can be extracted from its slides and taken from the top Af. The saw E, by means of its screw attachments-to the bow D, can be turned with its teeth towards the front end, instead of (as now shown) the side of the table, so that any kindE 'of sawing may be done. With the table C taken from" `the top A', and the teeth of the saw facing the front end of the frame, I can saw plank or other timber, having the guide k for a gauge. This guide is composedof` three pieces, se pivoted to each other that ongle may be given to the sawing. v
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patent, iS
'Ihc double-ratchet clamps a a', when arranged upon the movable table C and operated by the lever nu whereby wood of uneven widths may be securely held and adjusted to the saw, substantially as set'forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 28th day of February, 1867.
