Description

lUNI'I'EI.) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HEDDON, or ELKHART, INDIANA.
PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTING-FRAME.
Specification forming part Of Letters Patent No. 70,564, dated November 5, 1867.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HEDDON, of Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Photographic Printing-Frame for making an indefinite number of photographs of the same or of different persons or subjects upon one piece of paper or other photographic material; and I do hereby declare th at the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists of a frame, a perforated groupin g-board, and a vignetting arrangement.
Figure l is a perspective view of the frame, having a broad flange at each end, Figs. 2 and 3, to exclude the light from the sensitized paper inv printing when the grouping board, which is an inch or more shorter than the inside of the frame, is moved to either extreme end. Y
The grouping-board, Fig. 4, may be made of wood or card-board Or other materia1,restin g upon a plate of glass. It is perforated with holes arranged in the form of the group to be printed, and is made shorter than the frame to facilitate the arrangement of the various negatives required for printing, and is equivalent tO a movable back. (This frame will make an endless variety Of work by simply changing the grouping-board.) The set-screw, Fig. 5, keeps it in place.
The back, Fig. 6, is composed of live pieces, a, b, e, d, and e, but may be increased or diminished in number to suit different sized frames, and also to make different sizes and kinds of groups in one and the same frame. Each piece is detached from all the rest, and can be opened while the others are closed. They may be bolted or fastened together, thus making one compact back, or any fastening may be removed and any joint be Opened to see the progress of the printing, each piece having a spring-hinge and clasp. This frame back is so arranged that the printing may be viewed with equal facility at either end of the frame.
The vignetting, Fig, 7, is composed of two sliding pieces, e and f, running at right angles, which covers the front of the frame, the piece f having an opening nearly across it, in which runs the slide e, having a hole in the center for printing through, and using a tube tO effectually exclude the light from other parts Of the sensitive paper than the one being printed. By this double motion one can readily follow the form underneath in the grouping-board, making any kind of a print or arrangement of grouping desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The hinged back, of five pieces, more or less, so constructed that any two or more may be fastened together, or an opening be effected at either of the joints, thus admitting the cx aminaticn of the printing from either end of the frame.
2. Also, the broad flanges, in connection with the adjustable grouping board, which movable perforated board, or any other material answering the same purpose, I also claim, this being equivalent to the movable or sliding frame for carrying the back up or down.
3. I claim the adjustable and sliding back 5 also, the vignetting arrangement for excluding the light from the sensitive paper, by the use of the two pieces Of board Or other material, -with a tube for conduct-ing the rays of light to the negative.
4. I claim this invention separately and as a whole, in combination One with the other, substantially as set forth above.
JOHN HEDDON.
