TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

'Bo it known that I, BLANCHARD V. KIRK, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Skirt-Elevator; and I do hereby declare the following is a fu1l;. clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ofreferenee marked thereon. i

The nature of my invention consists in a device to be attached to a ladys waist, by whichher dressmay i be looped up or festooned, so as to raise the lower edge from the ground out ofthe mnd and dirt.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction" and operation.

A is a tube, about ivc-eighths of an inch in outside diameter. formed of' India rubber, or other elastic i materialtwl'iich can be bent in a circular form to t the waist of thewearer. I prefer'lndia rubber, as it is slightly elastic lengthwise, as well as bendable, and the same ring will stretch so as so t di'erenfpersons. This tube has at intervals, on its lower and outer edge, holes B, fig. 2, with eyelets riveted in the Asaid* holes. This riveting isdon'e by means of a long rod inserted through the tube. i This rod has on it a small turned conical nipple lfitting into the eyelet. The ends of the tube are capped with fel-rules, C and C,vwhich are sewn` to' it, as shown in tig. 4, at e. Que of theseferrules, C, has a notch, g, cut in it, and the other one, C', has a square pin which tits into the said notch g, thus forming a clasp, by which the two ends ofl the tube are' secured on the 'i person or one ferrule might have a hook and the other an eye, which would answer the same purpose as the plan shown.' On the lower and outer side `of these ferrules areltwo holes, h h, through each of which four cords k are passed, and are united in tassels L L, iig. 1. v.The other ends of thecords pass inside of the tube A, and

" one cord passes out through each eyelet B and terminates in a hooker l button L. To make the ring A more f convenient to handle, andlornamental, it is coveredfwith colored silk or wool woven on, as shown, fig. 1, in red lines, where one-half is shown covered with redv wool, the other being without it. If the material is loosely woven it will stretch slightly with the tube.

Fig. 3 shows a ladys dress, N, looped up by this device. Eyes are sewn on the dress at the part marked Z l, a few inches from the bottom, to which the hooks lare fastened. Then, by 'drawing the cords k and tying them in a. bow, the lower part of the dress is kept raised from thc ground. This device may be worn either inside or outside of the dress, whichever is preferred. The cords k being passed insides ring, as described, are prevented from the friction they would have if exposed.

To use my invention choose one a little smaller than the waist it is to be worn upon, and having clasped it round above the hips, fasten the hooks L into their corresponding eyes 4on thc dress, thc tassels L hanging outside in front. When it is desired to elevate the dress the tassels are pulled, and the cords c tied in a bow in front.
