JOSEPH GOLDM AR-K, OF BROOKLYN. NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 69,206, dated September 24, 1867.
IMPROVED FULMINATING COMPOUND.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH GOLDMARK, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, haveinvented a new Fulminating Compound; and I do hereby declare that the following is :1 full and exact description of the same.
Therm-ions so-calleil fulminating compounds, igniting by friction or percussion, heretofore manufactured, are liable to serious objections, either on account of their corrosive action upon metals with which they are brought in contact, the great danger from accidental explosion in their manufacture, or their deleterious effects upon the health of those employed in their preparation. The object of this invention is to obtain a. fulminnting compound which is free from these objections, and which can also be produced ata less price, and to thesc (Hills the invention consists inn compound in which the sulphocyonite of a metal or other base is used in combination with chlorate of potash, either with or without the addition of other substances.
The sulphocyanite which I have found in practice, all things considered, best adapted for the manufacture of such compounds is the sulphocyanite of lead, but among others which I nill mention as more or less suitable are the sulphocycnites of copper, zinc, and quicksilver, but these are all more expensive than that of lead.
I mix the sulphocyzmite and the chlorate of potash, in the state ofpowdc'r. The proportion which} consider best, in using the sulphocynnite of lead, are two (2) parts, by weight, of this sulpliocyanite, and live (5) parts of chlorate oi' potash, and to this I generally add one (1) part of saltpetreoi' of prussiate of pot-ash, or a lesser proportion of ench of the latter ingredients, the eiicct of which is to increase the flame and diminish the explosive force. Theabove-specified proportions of all theingredients may, however, be varied to some extent without materially changing the character of the compound. i
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- X1 fulminating compound, in which the sulphocyunite' of a metal or other base is employed, in combination with chlorate of potash, either with or'wit'ucutother substances, substantially 'as herein specified.
