IMPROVEMENT IN SAWING MACHINES.

BeV it known that I, II. C. FREEMAN, of Lewisville, in the county of Henry, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Sav/ingWood; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, mal/.ing part of 'this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view as seen from the front of the machine, and
Figure 2 is a perspective View as seen from behind the machine.
The same letters are employed in designating the same parts in both drawings.
A is the sill frame to which the mechanism is attached. Under one end of the frame I place wheels B B, upon which the frame and machine may be trundled from place to place, being raised at the other end by the handles C C. The side vertical timbers D D are properly framed and braecdto the sill. E is the buoi-t, for holding the wood to be sawed. 'Ihc stick of wood is held by the hook F attached` to the lever G, by which the hook is drawn down tightly upon the stick, and it is then secured adjustably by one of the notches on .the standard, H. rlhe wood is sawed by the scmicircular saws I, which are fastened to the oscillating frame L, attached to the shaft K. One side ofthe oscillating franic is adjustably attached at- K and IF, so as to permit the saw attached to it to be moved nearer to or farther from the stationary saw, according to the length to which it is intended to cut the tire-wood. The'saws are operated by the oscillating frame L, and they are 'kept in contact with the wood by their own weight and that of the frame L and shaft K. The shaft K has its bearings in blocks m, which slide freely vertically in the grooves cut in the inner faces of the upright posts D. The saws may be raised by means of the rods Nattached tc the bearings M. The rods are operated by thearms O of the shaft O, which is caused to oscillate by means of the crank I), which may be moved by any convenient attachment, as by a foot-lever and rod placed in such position as may be required by the convenience ofthe operator. The beam Q is placed across'thc machine, -above and behind the shaft K of the saws, in such position that as the oscillating frame is raised, the rear end thereof will bear against the beam Q, andv throw up the saws and handle of the oscillating frame, so as not to interfere with the operator in placing a stick of wood on the buck. The middle piece LI on the oscillating frame is intended to support a single semicircular saw when it is desired to cut the stick of wood only in the middle.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wood-sawing machine I claim the semicircular saws I I, attached to the shaft K in such manner that while one is fixed in position the other may be adjusted accordingto the length into which the wood is to be cut, arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
2. So arranging the shaft K and frame L, that the seinicircular saws I I may be attached either to the two frame pieces L, one fixed and the other adjustable, or one ofA them only be attached to the intermediate piece Ll, andthe frame be actuated directly by hand, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
. 3. So arranging the beam Q as to act upon the oscillating frame L, rwhen raised by the rods N, substantially as set forth.
