TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be itknown that LJsMEs Forums, of Plainwell', in the county of Allegun, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and improved Mode of Attaching Horse-Shoe Calks; and I do hereby declare that the follow ing is a full ancl'exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,-meking port of this specification, in which-- I Figure 1 is 11. side view: of a portion ofa. horseshoe with a section through thetoe and one of the heel-cslks. Figure 2 isa perspective view of the toe-culk detached. Like letters designate corresponding parts in both figures. 4 My invention consists in 'the special manner, hereinafter described, of snatching the collie to horse-shoes, so that they may be readily detached for sharpening without removing the shoe from the foot.
In the drawings, A represents the shoe, B thetoe, and 0 one of the hcel-calks. These calks are provided n'ith hooks or beaks 0 (preferably two for the toe, one being sulficicnt for each heel-calk,) on their upper face, or the side in contact with the shoe. The under side of the shoe is prorided with corresponding sockets forthe .reeeption of these beaks. The calhs are also provided with u z'innge extensiomf, which is secured to the'shos by means of a screw, g, as shown. The beaks-are hool'ed, and incline. preferably, forward, as represented, 80 that when the animal is drawing, the tendency will be to press the hook more firmly in its sockeg the beaked end of which holds it firmly to the shoe, thereby relieving the screw in at great measure of the strain that would otherwise come upon, it. 'Thus the beaks serve the double purpose of preventing lateral displacement and the separation-of the culks from the shoe. Were it not for the latter function, which is due to thehooked form of the projections, it would be extremely difiicult, it not impossible, to keep the cnlk secure by e'screw alone, as the great strain to which it would .be subject would soon wear or tear off the threaisnd thus unlo'ose the calk.
My improvement enables the ealks to be readily detached from the shoe, and shurpcned, without renmv ing the latter, which, to farmers and others living at a distance from, n smith's shop,'is a, matter of consideruble importance, and especially so in winter, when it often is necessary to sharpen the calks every few days.
What Icluim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- Attnching the calks to horse-shoes by means of the hook or book e and scre\vf,'in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two'subscrihing witnesses.
JAMES FORBES.
