TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONOERN:
Be it known thatI, JOHN HEGAnrY, of' Jersey City, Hudson county, -vNew Jersey, have invented a new and improved Self-Acting Portable Fountain; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use th'cvsame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in whichi Figure I is a vertical sectional View of my improved fountain, and
Figure 2 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a fountain for propelling common or scented water, which can be placed in any room, and be. removed with-ease, and will be constantly working, only requiring the occasional winding up of a spring. 4 v
The invention consists in the use of a rotary or other pump, which is secured to the bottom of the basin, and which is operated by clock-work, so as to throw a jet of water through a pipe into an upper basin, from which the water returns to the main basin again.
The invention also consists in combiningwith Vthis device a musical box, which is operated by the same clock-work that operates the pump, and a very agreeable and amusing ornament for parlors and drawing-rooms is thus constructed. i
A represents a basin, supported by a pediment, B, that consists of any'number of posts, which may be surrounded by ornamental basket-work or other suitable devices'. The basin may be round or oval, and is made of lcast iron or any other suitable material. To the bottom of the basin is secured a. metal ring, C, which forms a cylinder, in which the piston D of the pump operates. The water in the basin A flows into the cylinder,'and is thence forced by the piston D towards the bottom of the cylinder, and thence up through a pip'e, E, that communicates with the lower end of the cylinder C, as shown. Through the tube Ethe water is propelled int!) an upper basin, F, supported on a suitable pediment, G, Aas shown. l Holes a a are arranged in the sides of the basin F, through which the water returns into the basin A in jets of suitable thickness, thereby adding to the pleasing effect of the device, and keeping a constant supply of water in'the basin A. The piston D is represented as being provided with spiral anges b, whereby the water in the cylinder C is pressed downwards, towards the bottom of the cylinder, as soon as the stem el is revolved. Therstem d is tubular, and surrounds a. tube, e, which is secured to the bottompf ythe basin and cylinder,iand which tube e is of sufficient height to prevent the water from flowing into its upper end and dewn to the driving machinery. A vertical shaft, passes through the tube e, and its upper end is coupled with the upper end of the stem OZ, so that, as" the shaftfreceives motion from' a spring, Vg, it revolves the stem d, and thus operates the piston in the desired manner. The spring g is gear-wheels, through which the motion is increased, so that the shaftfrevolves rapidly. H is a musical box, which may be arranged belen* the basin A, and which may be easily operated bythe action of the-spring g.
The cylinder C may be arranged so as to form a depression in the bottom of the basin A, and any desired number of pumps and Ijets may be arranged to one basin, A, as may be found desirable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimras new, and desire topsecure by Letters Patent, is
1, The combination and arrangement, upon the pediment'B, of the `basin A, to thebottom of which is secured the metal ring C, with the perforated basin F, through which the tube E passes, flanged piston lD, within the ring C, and music-box I-I, as described, all operatedy by the clock-work, substantially as herein set forth,
for the purpose specified.
2. The tube e, as arranged around the shaftf and in the stem d of the revolving piston D, in combination with the cylinder C, secured to the bottom of the basin so that no Ijoints are in the device that would require packing to keep them water-tight, as set for-th;
