TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY OONOERN:
Be it known that we, J. M. OURRAN and JOHN C. BAXTER, of the city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Hame-Tugs; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To-enable others skilled in the art to construct and use our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
Our invention relates to haine-tags for'harness, and consists of new and certain improvements in the manner of constructing hamel-tugs. In the drawings- Figure 1 is a side view.
Figure 2 is an edge View.
Figures 3 and 4 are views of portions of' the haine-tug.
Figures 5 and 7 are views of different manners of attaching the trace-buckle; and
Figure Gis a transverse section on the line m w of ig. I. v
Hame-tugs have ordinarily been made of iron and leather, the eye of the tug, which attaches it to the hamm-being made of iron, and the balance of the tug being made of leather. And all tues made in this way are not ordinarily removable from the haine without being taken apart.
i We make our llame-tug A mainly in the usual form, as shown in iigs.l and 2, and entirely of malleable iron or other suitable metal, and of any desired size to suit different styles and strength oi' harness. I In our tug as shown in the drawings, B represents the eye for attaching it to the haine; O,Vthe body of the tug; D, the box-loop, and E the rear end to which the-trace-buckle is to be attached. vThe eye B consists of a continuation of the body C as far as the point a in gs. 2, 3, and 4.
We complete the eye O by means of the piece b, as,
shown in the-figs. 2, 3, and 4. This piece b we attach to the body C by means of a screw, c, and it may bemade to complete the eye B, either by a smooth joint, as shown in gs. 2 and '-I, or by being hinged to it, as shown in iig. 3, or in any other eonvenientmanner. The box-loop D we make of the same material as the body of the tug, and unite it with the tug'in such a way as to form a part of it. The rear end of the body O of the tug we make in the form shown in fig. l, and a. little thinner than the body of the tug, and with a shoulder, cl, and tongue, so as to receive the loopf, which is formed to receive the trace-buckle F, as shown in iig. 5. It is obvious that instead of making the rear end of the tug as shown in lig. 1, so as to receive a loop,f, it may be made so as to form the bow g of the buckle, as shown in figs. 2 and 7, witha hole for rcceiving the bolt 71, to hold the tongue z' of the buckle. The form of the box-loop D is shown in figs. I, 2, and 6. We show it rectangular, because that is the usual form of the end of the trace, but it may be made to suit other forms of traces.
Hame-tugs made in this way, entirely of malleable iron, are susceptible of the highest ornamentation.'
Figures and designs of any pattern desired may b e impressed or stamped upon them, or they may be plated with facility. Owing to the great strength ofthe iron, these tugs will not only be stronger and more durable,
but at the same time can be made much lighter and more ornamental than the tug made of iron and leather combined.
While we believe that malleable iron is the most suitable for making our llame-tags, and prefer its use for that purpose to other metals, yet it is obvious that other metals may be used in their construction. It is also obvious that while the body o` our hame-tug is made of metal, the box-loop may be made oi' gutta pei-cha, leather, or some other similar material.
Having thus, described ouriinvention, what we claim, is
A. llame-tug having its body A formed of a single strap of metal, with the eye B, having the hinged or detachable piece I), and its rear end formed for attaching the buckle F, substantially as shown'and described.
J. M. CURRAN,
JNO. 0. BAXTER.
