IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER PITMEN."
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY COWOERN:
Bc it known that I, WILLIA-MJ. KEENEY, of Florence, in thc county of Switzerland, and State of Indiana, lmvcinvented a new and useful Improvement in Coupling-Joint for the Pitman and Sickle-Bar of a Reaper; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,'and exact description thereof,'which will enable others 'skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had fto the accompanying drawings forming part of thisspeciiication, -in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the sickle-bar detached.
Figure 2 isa top view'oi` the pitman detached.
Figure Sis a side view of my invention, with the pitmau and sickle-bar connected.

The nature of this invention consists in connectingor'coupling the pitman to the sickle`bar of a reaping machine, with an adjustable knuckle-joint formed by a movable box fitted against the end o'f the sickle-bar so that it can work freely and accurately, while compensation for wear is fully provided for. I
A represents a Pitman, and B a sickle-bar of a reaping machine, which are attached and operated in the ordinary manner. The Pitman A has a slot or oblong hole, a, in the end for admitting a' hook, b, in one side of theA end of the sickle-bar. lThe hook 6 is made in a perfect segment of a circle on the inside andthe outside,
and the inside of the hook fits: and plays upon the end ofthe pitlnan as upon a journal, while the outside-of the hook tits as a knuckle within the corresponding socket in the end of an adjustable cap piece or box, c, that is fastened on the end of the pitman, anrl enters the slot a on the side opposite that'in 'which the hook b enters, and thus forms a perfect knuckle-joint, as shown in g. 3. The adjustable box c has in it two slots e, through whichpass screw-bolts to fasten it tirrnly to the pitman with nuts, and which slots allow the box to be moved up as the working parts wear away, and thus keep the coupling-joint perfectly adjusted, as shown in fig.' 6, detached. I
Having thus described my invention, I, claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The dotted adjustable box C, constructed as described, `its outer concave end fitting and working against the outer convex side of the hook 12 of the sickle-bar, its inner end secured to the pitman A, as herein Set forth for the` purpose specified.
WM. J. KEENEY.
