TO LL WHOM Il MAY CON CERN: i V
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. N oYss, of Norwich, in the county -of lNew London, und'Stnte-iotA Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in ar-Gouplings; and I do' lierebydeclare the following to bc an exact'description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereommerking apart of this specication, i'n which- Figure 1 represents e longitudinal section of the coupling.
Figure 2 a. top view.
Figure 3 a. front end view. p
Figure 4 the side lever and its guide.
The nature of my invention cons-ists in the construction of the adjustable head, n'ngular lever with guide,l
all in eombination.
A represents the outside cast-iron frame; B a spiral spring in 'the inside, against which the :idjustable head:
C operates. This adjustable heed has a groove, D, down 'its centre in front, in which the boltE lits, und a'. groove, H, along its hottom side, in which the end of the link J operates, 'so as to keep the link.) horizontal or level to prevent its falling down'in front, so as to couple easily and play to either side on the bolt QE. As the ears are pushed together the coupling is self-acting. The bolt E restingvat the top of the groove D falls and catches the link J', as the link I presses back the adjustable or spring-heed C. '.llo uncouple the ears, the brnk'esman raises the chain -K that dr'aws'up the angular lever L at the side; the lever L operates in a. slotted guide,lM5 by" means of which the bolt E is raised, and the numerous -uceidentsin coupling {mduncoupling cars are completely avoided.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure hy Letters Patent, is p The adjustable head C and pin E, with its devices'L and M for operating the saine, all conatruotedand arranged :is herein described and for the purposes set forth. I Y
GEORGE W. NOYES.
