IMPROVEMENT IN GATES,

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, H. F. Bsnscnm'rsn, of Davenport, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Gates; and I declare the following to be a, fuil, true, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 represents a. perspective view of my gate. i

A represents two upright posts, which are attached to the ground-sill B. Pivoted between these two posts is the folding gate 0. This gate is constructed like the ordinary folding gates in every respect, with the exception that the top been: D is hd'llowcd out, as shown by red lines. In this excavation, which is slightly inclined. towards the front end, there are placed two ormore rolling weights, E, for the purpose of assisting to raise and lower the gate. The top beam D is made to extend to the rear of the posts A sufiiciently far for the end to act as a weight to counterbalance the weight'of the gate C so that a. very slight force exerted upon it will either close or open it. Let the inclination be ever so slight, it will cause the rolling weights E to run to one end, and their weight will be sufficientto cause the gateto either fall or rise, and then retain it in tbct position.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- Thegate 0, when provided with the rolling weights E, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
