IMPROVBD WASHING MACHINE.

Be it known that I, W. W. ADAM,S, of West Derby, in the county of Orleans, and State of Vermont, have invented a new and improved Washing Machine; and I do hereby -decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip'tion thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved machine, taken through the line a: x, fig. 2.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved washing machine, so constructed and arranged that the washing may be done quickly and easily, which will not tearvtheclothes, and with which the labor of handling the clothes -shall be greatly diminished; and it consistsin. the combinationI of the reel or cylinder, lluted roller, and pivoted frame with each other and with vthe box or tub; the wholebeing constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described. j

A is the box or tub, which is rectangular in form, and which is supported upon suitable legs, B, so that it may be at a convenient height. C is the reel or cylinder, which is 'formed by attaching' slats or bars to two circular disks', as shown in Afigs. 1 and 2. The journals of the reel or cylinder C revolve in slots formed in the sides ofthe tub or box A, where they are held in place by the bars D, the llower ends of which are pivoted to the sides of the box or tub, and which are held forward against the bars E secured to the sides of the tub, securing the saidjournalsiu place and coveringthe slots in which they work by the buttons F, one end of which is pivoted to the sides of the tub near its upper edges in'such positions that their forward ends may rest against the bars D, holding them securely in place. ,G is a frame, the projecting ends of the forward cross-bar g of which form journals, which are pivotedinv notches in the upper edges ofthe side boards of the tub A. The ends of the side bars of the frame G project in front of the cross-bar g, 'are curved downward, and between them is pivoted the-roller H, the surface of which is deeply luted or groovedlongitudinally, as shown in fig. 1. I is a roller pivoted tothe side bars of the frame Gr, just in the rear of the cross-bang?, to prevent friction in feeding the clothes from the tub to the reel o'r cylinder C. The rear ends of the side bars of the frame G are connected by a cross-bar, which also serves'as a handle in operating the frame. J are pins attached to the bottom of the tub A, and projectiugupward, so as to form a rack to prevent the clothes placed in the rear part of the tub from working forward so as to get beneath theA reel C. K are cords, oneor more of .which may be attached to the bars ofthe reel C by having their ends secured to said bars, as shown in figs. 1 and 2.

In using the machine, one end or corner of an article to be washed is passed beneath the cord upon the reel or'cylinder C. Then, by `revolving thevsaid reel the article is wound around it, and is beat, rubbed, and squeezed by the action of the luted roller H, the pressure of which against the reel is regulated by bearing with more or less force upon the rear part of the frame G with one hand while the other is operating the crank L attachedto the projecting end of one of the journals ofthe reel C. When one article is suihciently washed, the end of another one is placed beneath the outer end of the oneupon the reel, and so on until the reelis full. The washed clothes may then be run from the reel C through a wringer attached to the end of the tub A.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl The combination of the reel or cylinder C, uted roller H, and pivoted frame G with each other and with the box or tub A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose sct forth.
