Description
@einen tatw gutem @Hita JOHN FRENCH, OF NEWPORT, KENTCKY.
Letters Patent No. 67,866, dated August 20, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOILER GAUGE-COCKS.
alle rigthult entre: in in time trtter anut mit milking part ni the sam.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN FRENCH, of Newport, Campbell county, State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manner of Constructing Gauge or Try-Cocks for steam-boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot" the same, reference being made to the annexed drawings and making a part of this specification.
i The nature of my invention consists in providing and using in gauge or try-cocks for steam-boilersra spiral or twisted valve-stem, so constructed that when being operated the steam or water escaping will` cause the spiral valve-stem to revolve, and thus keep the body of the cock free andAclear from any deposit of mnd, lime, or substance, and by this means always 'insure the proper working of the cook. In the annexed drawings- Figure 1 is a section showing the cock with the spiral valve-stem attached and in place; also the button or cap lupon the outer end of the stem.
Figure 2 represents a view ofthe spiral valve-stem'.
Figure 3, the body of the cock, and v Figure the cap or button.
The body of the cock, fig. 3, is made of east brass or other metal, of suitable form and size, through the centre of which is drilled or cast arliole, of equal diameter, to receive the spira-l valvefstem, and has at each.
end a bevel valve#seat. The spiral valve-stem, iig. 2, is made of iron, steel, or other metal. I make them of iron, forged the propell length, and about ve-eighths of an inch wide, and throe-sixteenths of an inch thick, then reduce theouter end to a round about one inchiin length, and three-sixteenths of an inch in diameter. The object of making the stem round at tbe outer end is to secure the cap or button, through which the stem revolves. On the other end ofthe stem is forged a simple eonieal valve, and turned to fit the valve-sent on the inner end of the body. The spiral form of the stem is had by heating and tivisting in the usual way. The cap or button, Iig. 4, is of brass or other metal, and has a hole drilled through. the centre'to securethe round end ofthe stem which passes through, and is held in place by la, rivet or nut onV the end of the stern, but left loose so as to allow the stem to revolve in the cap. The under side o f the cap is turned conical so as to fit the bevel valveseat on the outer e'nd of the body, fig. 3, so that the cock being used, the buttorror cap is pressed down upon' the outer end of the body, the cone will t into the valve-seat on the body and form atight joint, and prevent the steam from being foi-ced out upon the operator.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-is-
1. The spiral valve-stem A, in combinationwith the body of theeock C.
2. The spiral valve-stem A, the button or cap B, yin combination with the body-of the cock C, substantially as described. l
JOI-IN FRENCH.
