Description
@einen tetra atrnt @frn ALFRED MILES, OF BROOKLYN, NEWYORK A Letters Patent No. 67,787, dated August 13,1867.
GOMBINATIGN OF BRUSH AND RUBBER.
TO ALL WHOM IT .MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, A. S. MILES, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Combined Brush and Rubber; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a combined brush and rubber Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention, designed for draughtsmeus use, consists in a brush inserted in a block of India rubber in such a manner that'the entire surface of the rubber, with the exception of that end in which the brush is secured, may bev employed for the erasure of pencil marks, and so that the said rubber may be used as a handle for the brush in brushing dust or extraneous substance from the surface of the paper from which such pencil marks are erased; this construction of the device also enabling the same to be manufactured ata cost but little exceeding the block of rubber alone.
To enable others tounderstand the natureand construction of my invention, with reference to the drawing.
A represents a block of India rubber of any quality suitable for the erasure of pencil marks from paper or other substance. the said block A being preferably of rectangular form, as shown in the drawings. Secured in one end of this block A is a brush, B, which may be made of bristles, or any other suitable material, one end of the bristles or material being insertedA and fastened within the end of the block, while the other end thereof projects outward and constitutes the free and brushing. portion of the brush. In the manufacture of the article the bristles or equivalent material are so placed in the mould in which the block isformed that one end thereof will project into the interior of the mould, whereupon theblock is moulded around or upon such end of the brush, of course securely attaching thebrush to the block thus moulded, so that by these means the cost of manufacturing the device is rendered very little more than that of making the blocks alone.
In using the device, the block A is rubbed upon the paper or other substance from which it is desired to erase the pencil marks in the same manner that an ordinary rubber eraser is employed for the same purpose, and the marks having been erased the position of the block is reversed and the brush B is applied tothe paper us matter left thereon after the erasure of the marks by constructed according to my invention.
I will proceed to describe it or substance to brush away the dirt or other cxtraneo the block A, as just set forth.
What I claimas my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The brush B, in combination with the block A oi India rubber. substantially as herein set forth'for the purpose specified.
. ALFRED S. MILES.
