Description

@nimh tats 'atmt @ffice GEORGE GILBERT AND A. N. ALLEN, DE NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 67,644, dated August 13, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN IRONING MACHINES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, GEORGE GILBERT and A. N. ALLEN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Ironing Machines; and we do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the'accompauying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a side view. A
Figure 2 a front view, and in lFigure 3 a sectional view,
This invention is designed for ironing collars, cuffs, and similar small articles, and consists iu the arrangement of a segmental bed beneath an iron holder, the said segmental bed made elastic, and so as to traverse back and forth beneath the iron holder or polisher.
In order to the better understanding of our invention, as well as to enable others to construct the sume, we will proceed to a description thereof, as illustra-ted in the accon'ipanying` drawings.
A is the bed-plate, supporting in proper bearings, B, lthe segmental bed C, the face D of which is covered with cloth or iiexible material, and the bearings D are formed upon a plate, E, which rests upon India rubber, or other elastic material, a, (see iig. so that the plate E may be depressed and raised if occasion require. From the'bccl-plate-A an upright, I", supports the iron-holder G, the under surface of which is formed slightly convex, and so that the surface of the bed D bears against the under surface of the holder, as seen in iig. 3. The bed C is made to traverse back and forth beneath the holder G, as from the position denoted in blue to that *denoted* in red, and returnby a lever or other contrivancc, H, attached to the shaft of the holder. Into the holder G the heated iron is placed or other contrivance arranged for heating the under surface of the holder, and the article to be ironccl or polished is laid upon the bed D when in the position denoted in blue, then the bed is turned over to the position denoted in red, carrying the article to be ironcd. beneath the holder G, the surface of which rests upon the surface of the article to be polished, and being thus passed through a great number of times is smoothly and finely polished, the elasticity beneath the plate E being sufiicient to yield to the different thicknesses ofthe article-to be polished, or to any unevenness in the said article.
This machine may be attached to u table or any convenient place for use, and is so simple in its construction as to be extremely cheap, and performs its work much more quickly and easily for the operator than by the common method.
Having thus fully7 described our invention, what we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The segmental bed C arranged upon elastic bearings, and in combination with a polishing surface, constructed and arranged so that the said polishing surface vmay be heated, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
