HARRISON H. TAYLOR AND'JOHN H. WILSON, OF: ROCHESTER, NEW YORK. Letters Patent No. 66,265, dated July 2, i867.
IMPROVED MACHINE FOR ROLLING STENGHrTR'AP PIPE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, HARRISON H. TAYLOR and JOHN H. WILSON, both of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Rolling StenchJTrap Pipe; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front View of our machine.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
,Figure 3 is a detail view.
Figure 4 shows a specimen product of our machine.
' Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
The siphon of a stench-trap pipe is usually made in two parts, and these two parts, after being properly shaped, are soldered together. These parts or sections of the siphon have heretofore been formed by being beaten out by hand or by being cast. The object of this invention is to produce a machine? by which 'these sections may be rolled out and made with greater facility than by the ordinary methods, as hereinafter egplained.
In the accompanyingdrawings, A isa grooved roller, and B is a roller having a convex face which runs in the groove of A. These rollers are geared together by the gears E, fig. 1, and are opera-ted by a handcranlr, D. They are mounted in a frame or stand, 0. The upper roller is adjustable, it being suspended in journal-boxes J J, which slide vertically in the frame 0, and are held by adjusting-screws 7c B, fig 3, is a second convex or i'dund-faced roller, and its face is broader than that of roller B, These rollers are used alternately in connection with the grooved roller A, one of them giving "the upward turn of the pipe and the other the opposite or downward turn. The rolling face of the roller B, fig. 1 is not, concent 1 'ie with the groove of A, but its greatest diameter approaches nearest to the face of the roller A, so that when oneend of the strip of lead, or other material, is introduced between the rollers it is first thrown into a trough shape, and then, as the central parts of the rollers have the least space between, them, the bottom of the trough (It, fig. 4) is swaged more than its sides, and consequently the strip or trough is curved and its end is thrown upward and one of the curves isthereby obtained. The roller 13 is then removed and is replaced by the second one, 134, fig. 3, which is constructed with a.wider face than the first roller, so that. its greatest swaging action is upon the edges ff,
fig. 4, of the strip, and when the opposite endof the-strip is run into the machine the swagi-ng action upon its edges'bendsthe end F of the'strip'ortrong'h in a direction opposite tothat of-the first part, and by this means these strips of lead, copper, or other suitable material, are readily and rapidly brought into the double-bent form desired, and in the'proper shape for, soldering. Other forms of the bends may be producedl By these means the construction of these siphons or pipes is greatly facilitated, and an important saving in labor is made, besides which the pipe is much more perfectly and smoothly formed than when cast or beatenoutby hand.
' Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The method herein described of forming stench-trap pipe by the employment of the rollers A E B, operating in such a manner as to swage the sides and edges of the pipe unequally, so as to produce the necessary bonds, as herein set forth.
In witness whereof we have hereunto signed ournames in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' HARRISON H.. TAYLOR,
JOHN H. WILSON- Witnesses:
