Letters Patent No. 66,231, dated July 2, 1867.
IMPROVEDAPPARATUS FOB. FORMING SKELIS FOR SHEET-METAL TUBES.
To ALL WHoM rr MAY coNoERN:
Be it known that I, ROBERT FIDLR, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol, and State of- Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement in Skelp-'Iongs used inthe Manufacture of Welded Wrought-iron Tubing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact. description thereof, reference being had to .the accompiinying drawings, making a part o f this specification, in which-v Figure 1`is a. perspective view of the skelp-to'ngs with my improvement attached.
vFigure 2, a view of 'one part of Athe dies; and
Figure 3, a. direct front, view of the machine.
My improvement may be applied to any style of skelp-tongs nowA in use. In th'ose here represented, A is the lower jaw, permanently secured to some foundation. B, the upper jaw, hinged to the lower one at C, and
'operated through the lever D. On one end of these tongs is the die-holder or socket E, permanently aixed to the jaws either by rivets or screws, orl cast in the same piece with them, andis divided into two parts, so that when the tongs are opened each jaw may carry with it its own part of the die-holder, and also Whatever may be attached thereto. In this die-holder E are secured, by means of the bolts S S S S, the movable steel dies e 1 2 3 4. To secure the die to the holder or sock et the bolt S is passed through a hole drilled for it in the socket, and through the die nt the slot F, when the nut is screwed down upon the bolt, holding the die in its place.
The slot F permits the die to be moved to or from the centre. As the dies weer by use they may be led or ground off upon those edges that strike or come in contact with each other at 5 6 7 8, and then regulated, by4 the set-screws I I I I and the bolts S, to the size required. The dies may be in two, four, or more parts, although it is found hy use that four parts, as herein shown, is the preferable number.
The above-described'improved apparatus for forming sheet-metal tubes.`
ROBERT FIDLER.
