TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, LEWIS ALLEN, Of Berkeley Springs, in the county of Morgan, and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and improved Broom-Head; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of .the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation.
Figure 2 is longitudinal section. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures. The socket of the broom-head is made of leather pierced for the passage of the sewing-twine, and with a confining-band, also pierced, and retained .on the socket by grooves in the latter. In the drawings- A is the broom-head, and B a cross-piece fastened to the handle and enclosed by the butts of the broomcorn or other material of which the broom is composed. C is a leathersocket having extensions D with depressions d to receive the hand E which confines the corn. The soeketC and the Band F are pierced with holes through which passes the twine which secures the broom corn in the socket, and maintains it'in its flattened shape.
The mode of operation is as follows: The end of the handle A, with its cross-piece B, being placed within the socket, the butts of the broom-corn are stuck into the latter on each side of the cross-piece until a sufficient quantity is placed therein. The broom-corn in this condition will be nearly a. round bunch, around which the hand E is slipped, confining'it within a given diameter at this point. A pressure is then brought upon the broom which flattens it, andit is sewn from the side by the twine passing through the openings -g g in the socket O, and in the band E. The broom-head will outlast a great many fillings of corn, looks well, is light, substan- Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The handle with its cross-piece B pinned in the mortise at right angles to the handle, in combination with the perforated leather socket C and perforated leather handE, retained by thereeesses din the extensions D of the socket, substantially as described.
LEWIS ALLEN.
