TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ELIAS HOXIE, of Montezuma, Cayuga county, New York, have invented a new and improved Wheel for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a face View of my improved wheel.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the same, taken on the line a x, fig. 1.
Figure .3 is a side view of the hub.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to such an arrangement of the hub of a wheel that a larger number of spokes can b easily arranged in one wheel, whereby lighter material may be employed for the spokes as well as for the l'elloes, and whereby the spokes are more securely attached to the hub than was heretofore done.
The invention consists in the use of a metal ring arranged around the wooden huh, and provided with a zigzag ilangeprojecting from the centre of the ring, being arranged around its outside. The wooden hub is thus protected, and in each winding of the zigzag flange can the end of one spoke be held.
A represents a-wooden hub of usual construction and form, and made of wood or any other suitable material. Around the same is arranged a ring, B, made of cast iron or any other suitable metal. lVith the ring B is cast or welded, or otherwise connected, a zigzag flange, C, made of the same material as the ring B. The form of the flange C may be as is shown in fig. 3, or the corners may be more rounded and less pointed. The lower ends of the spokes D are fitted between the windings of the flange C, and corresponding to the shape of the windings, as shown in fig. 3, and are tenoned and let through the ring 13 into the hub A, as shown in fig. 2. The felloe E is arranged around the spokes in the usual manner. A large quantity of the spokes can he held in this manner on one hub, some of the same being in front, the others in rear of flange O, as shown. 'The felloe can be very fine and light, and can still not be knocked or driven in between the spokes, as they are too close; and thus this invention will be very valuable for light wagons or carriages, as it combines great strength with lightness of construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The metal ring B, arranged around the hub A, and provided with a zigzag flange O, substantialby as herein shown and described. 1
