IMPROVEMENT IN SAND-PUMPS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY cononnn:
Be it known that I, E. A. L. ROBERTS, of the city of Titusville, county of Crawford, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and improved Sand-Pump; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, cleaijand exact description thereof, reference 'being' had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters represent similarparts in all the views.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing a sand-pump (for removing sand and sediment fromoil and other deep wells) that, first, the sand and sediment shall be drawn or forced into the .pump by means of atmospheric or fluid-pressure, or both, at the bottom of the well; and, second, that the sand brought upby the'pump can be emptied or removed from it without inverting it, or detaching it from the sand-rope, thereby savingmuch time, and at the same time doing the work more effectually than can 'be done by any pump now known or used. To accomplish this result, I construct the pump as shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents an outside view or elevation of my improved pump. 7

My pump consists substantially of the cylinder or barrel 0, surmounted by the perforated cap i, and provided with an. improved valve. Z,-at the lower end, the piston 71, provided with-a plunger'and valve, working inside of the barrel 0.
When the pump is lowered into the well, the bolt 7c, extending from the bottom bf the valve Z, striking the sediment, or the bottom of the well, opens the valve, and keeps it'open, until the pump is raised; or .when a ball or other valve is used, the suction of the plunger, when raised, will lift the'valve from its seat, and allow the sediment-to pass into the pump. Upon giving the sand-rope sufiicient slack, the plunge r descends to the bottom of the pump, and upon lifting the piston and plunger, by means of the sand-rope, the sandand sediment enter the bottom of the pump and fill it, the air or fluid in the pump above the plunger passing out through the holes 8 s in the cap 2'. The plunger striking against the under side of the cap-2', raises the pump, with its contents, to the top of the-well, when, in order to empty the pump, it is simply necessary to lower it, when in a vertical position, upon the floor of the derrick or other convenient place; the projecting boltk, striking the floor, raises the valve 1; the plunger, being at the top of the pump, the air passes through the holes 3 8 provided for that purpose, and the sand and sediment pass out at the bottom of the pump, the fluidin the upper part of the barrel passing out after the sediment, and thoroughly cleansing every port of the pump, thus rendering the pump ready for use again, the whole operation of cleansingt'he pump being done without inverting it or removing itfrom the sand-rope, whichisa great advantage-over any other pump known, and especially when a very long pump is used. In case a ball or other valve is used, it isonly necessary to provide and insert a pin, is, fig. 3, in the floor of the derrick, or other convenient place, and by setting over and lowering the pumpon it, the pin raises the boiler other valve, and allows the sediment to pass out.
