B. A. LEWIS.
WhifHetI ee.
Patented May 28, 1867.
N4 PETERS, PHOTO-LITNOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D o
Quint -tst2a {g tter ffi BURDETTE A. LEWIS, or NEW BRITAIN, GONNECTIQUT, ASSIGNOR To HIM- SELF AND JEREMY W. BLISS, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 65,096, dated May 28, 1867; antedated May 16, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRACE-FASTENING.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I
Be it known that I, BURDETTE A. LEWIS, of New Britain, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvement in Trace-Fasteners; and-I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specifications and drawings so as to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same. I will proceed to describe its construction by referring to the drawings, in
i a which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of this improvement will be understood from the specifications and drawings. The object desired to be attained thereby is to afford quick and easy facility of attaching and detachingthe trace to or from the whiille-tree, and at the same timeprotect it (the trace) from being detached without the aid of the hand, thereby avoiding serious accidents which otherwise might occur. In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a .view of this improvement, the trace and whifiie-tree being broken ofi' near the ends.
a isthe whiflie-tree; bis the trace; 0 is a button, the shank oflwhich is secured in the whiflie-tree in the usual way; d is a washer, which is madefast upon the end of the wood-work and over the shank of the button, so as to prevent the wood from splitting or the shank from becoming detached from the whifi'le-tree. a is aprojection which extends back, from the shank a proper distance, so as to receive or allow a latch or spring, C, to be secured a short distance from its outer end, and making protuberances h on the outer surface of said button, which form a recess to receive the opposite end of said latch. I
Thus it will be seen that by turning the latch out of the recess, and placing the hole in the end of the trace,
over the latch and projectiomon to the shank of the button, and replacing the latch into the depression formed on the face of the button, the trace will be held firmly and securely in place.
I believe I have thus shown the nature, construction, and advantage of this improvement, so as to enable others skilled to make and use the same. i
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' The projection e, upon the button 0, in combination with the latch C, and protuberances h, substantially as and for the purpose described. c BURDETTE A. LEWIS. [L. 5.]
