ISAAC M. WELLS, OF JEFFERSONVILLE, OHIO, ASSGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WI'LLIAM W'OOD, OF THE SAME PLACE.
Letters .Patent No. 65,710, dated' June 11, 1867.
IMPROVED BURGLAR-ALARM.
T0 WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, ISAAC M. WELLS, of Jefl'ersonvilleFayette county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Burglnr-Alarm; and I hereby deelare the following to be a full, clear, and exaot description thereof, reference being had to the aecompanying drawing, making part of this specification.
This invention relates to a burglar-alarm which may communicate With many points in a building, so as to alarm the inmates should an entrunce be attempted through any one of' them. I
In the drawing, A sho'o's a ,box or frame furnishing bearings for the separate parts of the device `eonstituting my invention. B is a post. or shaft, having at its upper end a disk, B, from whose upper side project pins E, on whieh are slipped rings F at one end of cords G, whosc ontr ends being attached to windows, doors, drawers, Sto., cause any opening or disturbance thereofto be followed by a strain upon said cords and a'tipping of the post B. To the' lower end of the post B is affixed a wheel, H, the h`ub I of the wheel on the lower side forming a pivot, i, which ent'ersa suitable cavity in the top of the' frame at a. Connecting with the wheel near itsperiphery are cords J, which, passin,r vertically through the top of the frame, connect with a lever, K, at staple 7:, so as on the drawing of the cords'J, resulting from the tipping of the post B, to retract the said lever and draw the catch L from between the teeth m of the wheel M, allowing the said wheel to revolve in ohedience' to the pressure of the springr N through the medium of Wheels O and P. In revolving` the cogs m act on verge Q, causing the reciprocation of the knob R, which at each end of its stroke iinpinges upon the inside of hell S, which sorves by its ringing to alarm not only the inmates of the house but also the burglars. It will he ohserved that the machine requires to be wound up like a clock-alarm of ordinary construction by the key T, represented over the square end of the shaft of wheel O. A catch, U, serves to retain the lever Kin contact with the n'heel M, when themachine may be Wound but unset.
The breaking of the o ords or any other part of the machine is insured against from a. violent drawing of the cords, as vthe sloping position of pins E, when the alarm has been sounded, allows the rings to slip therefrom and the cord to be released. i
A modification of my device may bel so arranged as to release ahammer Whichmay explode a pereussion cap.
I elaim herein as new, and of my'invention- 1. The post or shaft B, wheel or disk H, with eords'J Operating to free the verge-wheel M, as and for the purpose stated.
2. In combination with the shaft B, disk H, cord J, and pivoted lever'K, I claim the pin or pins E, allowing the cords G to he self-detaching when they have performed their duty of starting the alarm. i
In testimony of which invention hereunto yset my hand.
I ISAAC M. WELLS.
