TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: v H
Be it known that I, HERRMAN I'IEMPEL, of the. city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new 1 and improved Bntton Hole Cutter; and I do her-eh; declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this snecificution, in wl1ioh- Figure 1 is a. side view of my improved button-hole cutter.
Figure 2 is a cross-seetion of thesame, taken on the line =2: 1:, fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a detail side view of the sliding rest; and
Figure 4 is a detail edge View of the cutter or knife.
Similar letters of, reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention relates to anew device for cutting button-holes of difierent lengths.
The improvements consist in having a sliding rest which is adjusted under the knife, so as to niake the some out longer or shorter holes; and also in making the knife in one piece, wlicreby'it cannot only he made cheaper, but also easier fastened in the jaw or arm to which it issecured'.
A and B are two arms, which are pivoted together like the arms oi'a common pair of shears; a and b are their respective handle ends; and c and d, their jaw ends, as shown in fig. 1. To the jaw cis secured the knife or cutter C, which is made so as to cut the eye and slit ofa button-hole. Usually the knives for cutting button holes are made of two pieces, the piece 0 for cutting the eye, and the long straight pieceffor cutting the slit of the button-hole; Itwas very difficult to accurately secure these two pieces in the jaw, a-nd when secured, they would easily get. out of order. By making the whole knife in one piece, I can. much easier adjust and secure it in the jaw a, providing simply a mortise in the inner surface of the jaw, and keepingthe letter in position by means of wedges, set-screws, or other suitable devices. On the jaw d is arranged a. sliding block, D,
which when, in the position shown in .fig. 1, is exactly under the knife C, and a. button-hole can be then out, which is as long as the whole knife. By moving the block D towards the pivot of thejaws a less portion of it will be brought under the cutting edge, and a shorter hole will be out on i and it can be so regulated that holes of any desired length, but none longer than the knife, can be out on this machine. The block D is held on the jaw 01 by means of straps gg fitting around the jaw, as seen in'figs. 1, 2, and 3. One of the sides of the jaw is provided with a row of small holes, as shown in fig. 3, into which a spring-catch, 1., fits, so that thereby the block D can he firmly held in any desired position. i
I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patentj The sliding block D when secured.- to the jaw d by means of strapsg g, and when held in position by a spring-catch, 71 fitting into one of a. series of holes arranged on one side of the jaw d, all as set forth.
HERRMAN HEMPEL.
'itnesses: I
