Be it known that I, ALGBRNQN GILLIAM, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harness-Pads; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, l and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciii cation. l

My invention -relates to. certain improvements in the construction of harness-pads, so as to secure economy in manufacture, neat'ness in, appearance, and durability in use. In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 represents a pad-tree, of my invention, made of malleable iron or other suitable metal.

Figure 2 represents a. harness-pad embodying my improvements.

Figure 3 is a transverse section of the same through its centre.

'A is the base of the tree, with side flanges B,`which project upward from the base-plate A, just within the flanges B, The plate A is perforated by a series of small holes, C, used for making fast the binding or facing,

by which the edges B of the tree are covered. D is the leather pad-cover; E, the ange (or side) facing, machinestitched at the lower edge e. F is the heavy leather bur-piece, carrying the bu-rs or nuts, vinto which the terrets Gr and screws H screw, in vthe act lof fastening the separate parts of the pad together. I is the soft Dart of the pad, which rests upon the back of the horse.

' In making an ordinary harness-pad the metal tree is' placed between the covering stripfof leather E, and another piece of the same size,'bcing each of them somewhat larger than the tree, in order tofailow the stitching by which the tree is retained in place. The edge of these pieces of leather demands facing,` and to accomplish this the bur-piece is cut one and one-fourth of an inch wider than the piece of-leather D,.ive,eighths of an inch on each side, and the same is then softened by moisture and turned up in front of the'ed'ge;` of the upper pieces; this-is then allowed to get dry and then chamfered oif to a proper degree of thinness. the facing-leather (which is stitchedy fast to the bur-piece and the under piece of leather I) is brought oventheturnedsup edge-of the bnr piece; then it'is required to be neatly stitched by hand through the burepiec,e,`the said stitchingl of the facing 'and upper piece D making a large item in the cost of a pad.

v'In lthe makingof a pad with my tree, the hand stitching-in of thel tree between. tinto-covering pieces of P leather is dispensed with, as also the hand-stitching of the facing. The somewhat di'iicualt: operation of' trimming or chamfering oi` of the upturned part of the bur-piece, together with the waste of' num-lr heavy and expensive leather, is avoided; also the inconvenience of Waiting for the same to dry.

In the ordinary pad, the tree being placed between two pieces of leather, and retained there by the omamental llandfstitching spoken of, makes the repair-:of a' broken tree an expensive operatigas, at, thev least, one-half of the stitching must be ripped before the broken tree can lie-taken out, and, asy the fracture. of au ordinary tree is of no uncommon occurrence, and as my pad can be taken apart without the destructiau afa stitch, it possesses great'advantage over ordinary pads in this respect. Wbenit is desired to substitute a' new tree for a fractured one, in a pad of my construction, the check-hook J`, tzerrets G, and screws H are unscrewed, when the tree is free to be taken out and al new'one substituted-the work of five minutes. It will also be found that owing to the extra strength'a'orded to my trees by the tianges B, their liability to fracture or eren become misshapen will be very small. The firmness ofthe flange will always keep the leather covering the facing inY place, and not allow the corners of the same to be thrown out of place by careless usage.

I claim herein as newfand of my invention- 1. A harness-pad plateor tree of malleable iron or other metal, with an upper flange, B, and lowerplane o1' fiat surface, withholes C, as and for the purpose stated.

2, I- claim, as a new article of manufacture, a. harness-pad, with a tree consisting ofthe elements A, B, and C, in combination with the pieces D, E, and F, substantially as described. i
