D..A. DICKINSON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLANl) Letters Patent 1V0. 691,206, dated April 30, 1857. v I
I IMPROVEMENT IN MAGHINE FOR HUSKING CORN.
digegtlgthnlt rttcttth in in time itatters fintmt mm mating pitta! tigt same.
Be it known that I, .D. DICKINSdN, of the city of- Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a" certain new and useful Improi ement of Belts and Pulleys in Machines for -Husking or Shucking Corn and I do hereby declare that, the following -is a fulh clear, and e xa'ct descriptionof the construction and operatiorri of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and'to the letters and marks thereon; said drawings forming part of" this specification, and showing, by I Figure 1 thereof, a top viewpf. my improvemeziflflandby Figure 2 a vertical sectionof the same. i I
In both of these figures like parts are indicated by like marks and letters.
This improvement of belts and pulleys is intended to be used in that class of machines on which a patent was recently granted to me, whereby the stalk can be cut and'separated from the unshucked ear, the earshucked v or hushed, and the corn shelled from the ear vby one continuous operation; but the improvement may be applied to any machinewhere the huskin'g or shucking is performed.
In this kind of machines it is very important that the ear should be fully and completely hnsked, and that the means for doing this should not be liable to become clogged and bound by confinement of the blades or shucks. The leading object of my improvement, therefore, is to prevent the difficulties-here alluded to, and to secure perfect shocking of the ear and the free delivery of the blade or shuck or husk. I
The drawings represent my improvement enclosed by a rectangular frame or'boai, in the end pieces of which were the bearings of the shafts Z), which have the pulleys c, and which pulleys may be made as apart of the shafts, or may be separate and then properly attached to the shafts. These shafts may be plain, or, as is indicated near their ends, may be fluted. The pulleys, it will be noticed, are somewhat of the character of eccenatXlCS, the extreme radial line of the one pulley extending beyond that of the pulleymext toit, and so on through the series or set of pulleys, so that there is a projecting edge, 11, of every alternating pulley. This arrangement provides for the more perfect separating of the hush from the car by the more ready and easy seizure of the husk. The drawings show the shafts with pulleys near the top of the frame or box, and-two below, with the smaller face or periphery of the one in line with the larger face of the other, and a band or belt passing around each set of such two. Thesebelts,f", may be of India rubber, or some suitable material, and there may be more than the two sets or serics of shafts and pulleys thus surrounded by the belts, if deemed useful or desirable. Teeth, g,ca1i be placed between such of the pulleys as it may be found requisite to use, to secure more fully the removal or seizure of the husks. Power applied to the shaft b, or to any one of the shafts, will move that shaft and the one below it, friction of the belts being sufficient for the motion of the other pulleys; but if this should not prove sufficient, gearing by toothed surfaccsor other mechanical means could be resorted to.
. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Let ers Patent, is-
The arrangement of shafts having puiley s placed eccentrica-lly, andbelts, substantially as and for the purpose herein recited.
And in combination with the pulleys or their equivalents, I claim the teeth g, for the purpose herein set forth.
This specification signed'thisfourth day of, October, 1856.
- D. A. DICKINSON.
