WILLIAM PORTER; SR, AND WILLIAM PORTER, JR.,. OF NEW YORK, N. Y. Letters Patent No. 64,141, dated April 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN, LANTERN.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM PORTER, Sn, and WILLIAM PORTER, Jr., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Lantern; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in-the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an adjustable globe-lantern, that is, a lantern, the globe of which can be'easily attached or detached for cleaning or replacing a broken globe, which lantern is cheaper and simpler than any other adjustable globe-lantern now in use; the improvements being such that they can be easily arranged on any lantern now in use.
The invention consists in arranging an upright flange around andon the top of the base of the lantern. A hook-shaped extension of one of the guard-wires is passed through a hole in the aforesaid flange', and the opposite guard-wire has an eye or ring-shaped prolongation, which also passes through a hole in. the said upright flange. A hook or catch, arranged on the underside of the covering-plate of the base, engages the said ring or eye, and thus holds the guard securely to the base, and consequently also the globe and cap of the lantern, while by simply detaching the catch from the eye, the upper portion may be removed from the base of the lantern. In the annexed drawing our invention is completely illustrated Figure 1 being a side elevation of our improved lantern.
Figure 2, a horizontal sectional inverted view of the same, the plane of section being indicated by the line a: z, fig. 1.
Figure 3 IS a detail sectional view of the base A of the lantern.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. 7
A represents the base, B the guard, C the globe, and D the cap of the lantern. The cap is firmly secured to the guard. The upper horizontal plate a of the base is provided with an upright flange or ring, b, within which the lower ring 0 of the guard fits exactly. The said lower ring is not made of wire as usual, but is made in the shape of an inverted annular trough, as shown, so that the wires d d of the guard may be prolonged through the ring a. One of the wires d, of the guard B, is prolonged beyond the ring 0, and is bent so as to form a hook, e, while the wire which is opposite to this one, is also prolonged beyond the ring 0, its ends being formed into an eye or ring, The book a, 'is fitted through a round hole in the upright flange I), and the ring or eye is passed through a slot in the plate a and flange b, and then a hook, g, fig. 2, which is arranged below the plate a, being pivoted to the lower surface, engages the ring f. Thus all the parts of the lantern are held together, and can be instantaneously taken apart by simply disengaging the hook g from the ringf.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The lower guard-ring a, when made of sheet metai, as described, so as to permit of a prolongation of the guard-wires substantially as herein shown and set forth.
