TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:

Be it known that I, ALBERTUs LARROWE, of Cohocton, in the county of Steuben, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to a simple and pract. cal invention, and one which can be used on the side of a hill or uneven ground.

In the annexed drawings, A A represent a series of horizontal slats, connected at the centre and ends by the rails D D. "B 0 represent the fence posts between which the gate is operated. The post B is provided with -a vertical into which the ends of the rails Aare inserted, where theyare held by the latch t. Upon the inner edge of the post 0 are two rabbets, e e, one near the top, and. the other near the bottom, which are slightly bevelled at inside, and extend from the edge of the post in adiagonal direction. Upon the face of this postC is a roller, which is placed between two of the rails A A, for shifting the gate, and at the same time holds it from being raised by hogs or other animals.

In operating this gate the latch t is raised from the notchrr: on the end of the rail, when the gate is raised upon the rabbets and drawn as far as the centre stay D, when it is then drawn toward the operator and forced upon its roller to the front, and at right angles with the post C. By the red lines it will be seen that the gate 4 may be raised to any suitable angle at the front and held by its latch, so as to suit the inclination of the earth. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The combination and arrangement of the-gate as hereindescribed, with' the post 0, having the rabbets e e, and roller 9 and post B, with slot and catch 13, in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
