Description
@uiten faire atat @ffice ELI J. MANVILLE, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNORTO TURNER SEYMOUR di JUDDS, OF WOLCOTTVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
Leners Para@ No. 63,275, dated Mai-@1t 2c, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN METAL CASES FOR SPRING BOLTS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that I, ELI J. MANVILLE, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Machinery for Making Sheet- Metal Cases for Spring Bolts, ne.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being'had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure I is a perspective view of the sheet-metal case that this machine is designed for manufacturing.
Figure 2 is a plan of'the machine complete.
Figure 3'is a section through the forming dies at the line x x; and
Figure 4 is a cross-section at the line y y.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts. i
The object of my invention is to bend up sheet'inetal into the form of a cylindrical case, with a flange at one end turned outwards, and a fiange at the other end turned inwards. These cases are employed for receiving the spring and its bolt that are used in window-sashes for sustaining the same at any point where a cavity may be formed in the window-casing ,but these sheet-metal cases may be employed wherever available.
In luy-machine the following movements are performed, which I state in their order, and then give the means for effecting thosemotio-ns: l
First, a piece of sheet metal is bent up into a U form between the mandrel a and a half-round die, b, by said mandrel a being pressed sidewise down upon the piece of sheet metal.
Second, the sheet metal is closed around the mandrel by a die, c, coming down upon the edges of said sheet.
Third, a die, d, is slidden up against the end ofthe cylinder of sheet metal, and turns a fla-nge outward around the end.
Fourth. Simultaneously a die, e, comes up against the other end of the sheet-metal cylinder and-gathers it inwardly; and,
Fifth, at the same time the mandrel a has an cndwise movement given to it to smoothand complete the formation of the inwardly-turned flange between. theend of the mandrel a and the die e. The die c and mandrel a rise to their irst position ready to receive and actl upon another piece of sheet metal; but previously, and by the Sixth movement, the finished case is projected off the mandrel by an end motion given to the die d.
fis the main shaft, revolved by competent power in the direction of the arrow. g y are slings, carrying at their ends the die c, beneath which is a spring, i, to keep the die c up, except when pressed down by the cam h', that acts upon the lever lc, having its fulcrum at k in a standard upon the bed lof the machine, which also supports the die b and other parts of the machine.
The first movement aforesaid is eifected by the lever m, that has 'an eye yat its end, through which passes the die d. This lever m is acted upon by a cam, m, and spring, 1.
. The third movement aforesaid is effected by the lever n on a fulerum, 2, acted upon by a side cam to the disk nl', to give to the stock o of the die CZ and mandrel a a slight, powerful end motion, to turn the ange outwardly on the sheet metal. The stock o is supported in a box, o. And said stock o is hollow, and the mandrel a at its inner end is hinged therein, as at 3, by a ball or joint. And the mandrel has around it,within this stock o, a spring, 4, to give to the die d the sixth movement before mentioned, when the mandrel has been raised by the lever fm, the die ci being drawn back against said spring by the camp acting on the lever p1, and link pz to the arm 5, from the die d, the cam in being shaped so as to allow of the pin at the end of the'lever p1 being relieved to allow the spring 4 to act.V The die CZ and mandrel a are moved endwise simultaneously by the lever n` and its cam n, effecting the third and fifth movements aforesaid.
The fourth movement is eifected by a lever, q, on a fulcrum, 6, acted upon by a cam projection on the side of the disk q', the other end of the leverfpressing against the outer end of the die e. 'Ihis die c is supported in a stock, e', and is drawn back by the spring 7`as the pressure o f thelever q is released.
That I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the mandrel a and dies b, chal, and e, to which movements' are communicated, in substantially the manner specified, for bending up a sheet-mctal case with flancos at its ends, as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto'setmy signature this fifth day of September, A. D. 1866.
ELI J, MANVILLE.
