IMPROVEMENT IN ROLLING-MILLS.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM W'.- HOWELL, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented vcertain Improvelments inl Rolling-Mills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to that Class of mills. in which a shield is used for turning the end of a bar passed between the rollers, back to the side from which it was introduced; andmy invention consists of certain springs described hereafter, for aiding the operator in introducing the bar to the desired groove, and guiding the bar as it is turned up, and directing itin its proper course between the rolls.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I Will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which-d Figure l represents a vertical section ot sufficient of a rollinginill to illustrate my improvement; and

A and B are the upper and lower rolls, in which are grooves and projections adapted in the present instance 'for the manufactureot' ordinary bar-iron, the journals b b of the rolls turning in the direction of the arrows in standards ofthe usual construction, and these standards being secured to a` suitable base-plate, the upper surface of which is represented by the line D. To the base-plate are secured as many plates or shields E E as there' are spaces between the rolls, through which spaces the bar has to be passed, there being in the present instance one shield beneath each groove in' the lower roll, although a single shield for the whole of the groovesmay be used. Immediately above each shield, and to the base-plate D, is secured a spring, ct, there being one spring for each of the grooves in the lower roll, the outer end of the spring being so elevated as to enter-a short distance `into the groove. Each shield is curved upward at the rear, as represented in iig. 1. The operator 'takes his stand infront of the machine, and pushes the end of the heated bar` :r in the direction of the arrow 2, beneath the lower roll B, and above the spring a, into one of the grooves with which the spring coiucides.- By the movement of the lower roll in the direction of the arrow, and guided by the curved 'portion of the shield, the bar is bent and carried upwards, and passes between the rolls withinthe groove into which it Was first introduced, the
bar nally taking its place on the loor in front of the rolls, where it isagain seized by the operator, who introduces it to another groove prior to its further reduction by a-second passageinto another groove between the rolls, and this operation is continued until the bar is reduced to the desired size. The springs a perform the important duties of aiding the operator in guiding the bar into the groove, and of maintaining it there, as the bar is turned upwards and passed between the rollsas described.
