MARSHALL GILBERT, oF NEW Y'oRK, N", Y.' Leiters Patent No. 62,836, 'daad March 12, 1867.
'IMPRO'VBD GARBAGE B0X.v
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, MARSHALLV GILBERT, of the city and State of New York, have invented` made, and' applied to use a certain new and useful improvement in Receptacles for Ashes, Garbage, lltc. and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein I have represented a vertical section of my said receptacle.`
In cities greatv inconvenience results fro'm the retaining of ashes and garbage until the same can be removed by the carts employed for that purpose. Various receptacles have been providedfor such refuse matter, suchA as narrow boxes, placed upon the edge of the sidewalk, metallic urns, a'nd barrels; but these all occupy valvuablc rcom, Boxes have been sunk in the sidewalk; but these had eitherto bedug out, and the `refuse matter shovelled into carts,`or else there was no provision for the watery portions of the refuse to pass away and not obstruct the receptacle. l 4
The nature of my said invention consists in a sunken vessel, without a bottom, let down so that its upper end isflush with the sidewalk, and havinga ring or ledge attached or formed on the inside some little way from the lower edge, in combination with a movable perforated support for a tub or pail to receive the ashes, garbage, or other refuse matter. By this construction a space is left below'rthe perforated bottom, into which water or liquid refuse matter may run, and soak away intothe earth. The pail or vessel for the ashes or garbagelcan be lifted up and emptied periodically, and the cover that is provided to the whole apparatus encloses the same, and keepsout rain; but said cover can be easily lifted for, the introduction of ashes or garbage; and should the perforated support and ash-paily become frozen together, said support will lift out with' the pail., and when the lower part ofthe receptacle becomes offensive, from the liquid matter running into the same, the'gratling or support may be lifted out and thc surfaceearth removed. l
In the drawing, a represents a portion of the sidewalk, the curb and gutter; cis the exterior vessel, without a bottom, sunk to the level of the sidewalk; d is the movable cover of the same; e is a ledge 4or ring within the vessel c, supporting the grating'f, or perforated support for thev ash-pail or receptacle g, provided with handles,by means of which it may be lifted out for emptying. What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patentfise- The vessel c, formed with a ring'or ledge e, in combination with the movable grating f and receptacle g, the whole constructed and applied` in the manner specified, to form a receptacle for ashesY and other refuse matter. Y
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this eighth day of January, A. D. 1867.
