IMPROVEMENT IN WATER ELEVATORS.
.To ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN T. GILBERT,- of Elgin, in the county of Kan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsv on Water Elevators; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and'operation ofthe/same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part olthis specication, in which- Figure 1 is a vfront elevation. The nature and objects of my invention consist inf an improved automatic device for reversing the motion of water elevators having two buckets, and in the combinations hereinafter mentioned.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my'invention, I will proceed Ato describe its construction and operation. l

E, cylindersT VT', so arranged as to revolveon the shaft E; ythe gear-wheels i L' N, standard F, collar S, so arranged as to revolve with the shaft, but capable of lateral adjustment, and provided at the centre with a ledge or projection, are all made and arranged in the usual manner, except that I maketh@ collar with ratchet-teeth at Athe ends, and like teeth on the ends of the hubs of the wheels. The rollers have a broad ange on each end, and in size are to Vbe adapted to the chain or' strapnused on the bucket, which must be i'lat The knob k on the b.uckets,rand theiemptying bail x, are arranged in the usual manner. The operation of vthis device is as follows: `As the rope passes from one end to the other ofthe cylinders T T it moves the roller along on the rod t, the rope being held in the groove j by the weight of the bucket. As the bucket is raised, the chain or strap e will pass over the roller z', between the anges, and the bucket will be held in the proper position for the knob 7c to be caughtjby the emptying bail Iiprefer to have the strap o made of'meta'l. It is not essential to the working of my device that a tube be used; other forms can be used if made so as to hold the weights and permit their free motion.
In the use of my device for shifting the collar S, I do not confine myself to water elevators, but claim said device lfor the purpose of reversing motionA in all cases to which it can be applied.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hollow double lever B, when operated or held in place by balls, substantially as specified.
2. The jointed lever P P', constructed substantially as set forth, in combination with the Weighted lever B.
3. The combination und arrangement of the double weighted lever B, jointed leven? P', and ratchet S, with the loosely-revolving cylinders T, mitre-wheels L L N, well cords, straps c, friction-rollerz', buckets A, and
discharging bail fr, when constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
