FRANKLIN iT. GILBERT, OF ELGIN, ILLINOS. ALetters Patent No. `61,731, dated February 5, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER ELEVATORS.
.To ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN T. GILBERT,- of Elgin, in the county of Kan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsv on Water Elevators; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and'operation ofthe/same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part olthis specication, in which- Figure 1 is a vfront elevation. A s.
Figure 2 is a sectional view, showing the lever B, balls H H', andthe lever P P separated at the joint.
Figure .3 shows the movable spool z'. f l
The nature and objects of my invention consist inf an improved automatic device for reversing the motion of water elevators having two buckets, and in the combinations hereinafter mentioned.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my'invention, I will proceed Ato describe its construction and operation. l
The curb M, shaft. E, cylindersT VT', so arranged as to revolveon the shaft E; ythe gear-wheels i L' N, standard F, collar S, so arranged as to revolve with the shaft, but capable of lateral adjustment, and provided at the centre with a ledge or projection, are all made and arranged in the usual manner, except that I maketh@ collar with ratchet-teeth at Athe ends, and like teeth on the ends of the hubs of the wheels. My device for shiftd ing the collar S is as follows: B is a tubular lever, about three inches in diameter, andin length adapted to the size of the curb. This lever is attached to the standard F by the bolt a, so that the lever moves freelyv on the bolt, and it must beso adjusted that the ledge h on the collar Swill enter the slot 91', in the upper endof the lever P. SPIP" compose aat-jointed lever, having a..slot, n, in the upper end to receive. the ledgeion the collar S. P should be cast or made as a spart of or be firmly attached to the lever B. The joint in the'lever P P is a double knuckle joint, and is placed at a point Aabout one-third of the distance from the lever B to the upper end of the lever P; 1n the hollow lever B are two metallic balls, or other suitable balls or weights, of such size that they cannot pass the bolt u, and of 'sufficient weight to operate the levers, the weights to`be ot' such 'shape as will permit them to pass freely throughv the lever B. The ends of the lever B must be so secured that the weightscannot roll out. The lever B, the buckets, and the device for emptying the same, are to be so placed and arranged that each bucket, as it is emptied, will come in Contact with its end of the lever B, and raise it far enough above the horizontal position to cause the weights' H H to change their places and pass, one from the centre to the end, the other from the end to the centre of the lever B. The lever B mustbelso placed that the cross-bar O will not interfere with its operation.- The shoulders of the knuckle joint must be placed ,aty such distance apart that the lever B can be operated 'sufficiently to cause the weights H H to change their position without acting upon the collar S; and at the moment that the buck-et is emptied, the shoulders towards the raised end of the lever B should be in contact, the jointed leverthen .becomes` rigid and the collar S is moved; The operatiori'gof this device' in shifting the collar S will be readily seen. When a bucket israised and emptied, it comes in contact with and raises its end or arm of the lever B, so that the weight in that arm of the :lever rolls to the centre, while the weight in the other airnof the lever rolls to-the end. r pon reversing'the motion of the shaft a trie,vtl1te pressure upon the teeth on the collar Sv is removed, and thereupon'the weight in the depressed end of the lever B, acting upon the collar S through and by means of the jointed lever-P, shifts the collar S, and it is held in gear by the weight at the end of the lever B. My device for presenting the buckets in a proper position to be emptied isas follows`:. The rod t is iirmly fastened to thcsides cf'thecurb,
'being a little below and in front ofthe cylinders T T. On this rodI place two movable friction=rollers, in the middle of each of which is a groove, j, of sufficient size toreceive and hold the rope. The rollers have a broad ange on each end, and in size are to Vbe adapted to the chain or' strapnused on the bucket, which must be i'lat The knob k on the b.uckets, rand theiemptying bail x, are arranged in the usual manner. The operation of vthis device is as follows: `As the rope passes from one end to the other ofthe cylinders T T it moves the roller along on the rod t, the rope being held in the groove j by the weight of the bucket. As the bucket is raised, the chain or strap e will pass over the roller z', between the anges, and the bucket will be held in the proper position for the knob 7c to be caughtjby the emptying bail Iiprefer to have the strap o made of'meta'l. It is not essential to the working of my device that a tube be used; other forms can be used if made so as to hold the weights and permit their free motion.
In the use of my device for shifting the collar S, I do not confine myself to water elevators, but claim said device lfor the purpose of reversing motionA in all cases to which it can be applied.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hollow double lever B, when operated or held in place by balls, substantially as specified.
2. The jointed lever P P', constructed substantially as set forth, in combination with the Weighted lever B.
3. The combination und arrangement of the double weighted lever B, jointed leven? P', and ratchet S, with the loosely-revolving cylinders T, mitre-wheels L L N, well cords, straps c, friction-rollerz', buckets A, and
discharging bail fr, when constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
