TO ALL WHOM'IT- MAY CONCERN: l
Be it lknown that I, P. BRADFORD, of New Haven, in 'the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented e new Improvement in Ornament for Con Screw Heads; and I do-'hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a. full, clear, andexact description of the d ssm-e, and which said drawings constitutepart' of this specification, and represent ,l in
i v Figure I, a. perspective View; and in Figure 2, a. longitudinal central section enlarged.
My inirention is designed to cover the head of a, common screw or nail' after it has been inserted, giving it the appearance 'of a. richly ornamentcd head, and is designed more particularly for codin screws, but equally applicable wherever such an ornamented bead is desired.
To en able others to construct anduse my improvement, I will proceed to describe' the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is a plate of any desired form or configuration, formed from thin sheet metal, in the usual manner of forming sheet-metal ornaments, pierced in the centre et D to receive a, screw or nail, as denotedin blue, tig. 2. F isthe Acup or cover, also of any desired form or configuration, similarly formed, and is hinged to the plate A :it E by forming a. tongue, e, on the cap, -a.s denoted in red, tig. I, and inserting it through a holle in the plate A, :as seen in fig. 2. Upon the opposite side of the cap,/I form a tongue, N, bent in the form as seen in tig. 2, and pierce the plate so that the tongue N may be easily pressed therethrough, the natural elasticity of the metal causes this tonglie N to activas a. spring or latch, and securely hold the cap upon the plate, as denoted in bleek, fig. 2. By depressing the said tongue or spring N the cap mayv be opened, as denoted in red, iig. 2, for the insertion of the screw or nil, as denoted in blue, and after the screw has been so inserted, turn down the csp, press the tongue or spring N through the plate A, as denoted in black, and the cap will be securely retained in its position on`the plate, and havelthe appearance of a large ornamental head, the screw or nail serving to secure the plate. Y Y
I am swore that ornamental heads of this character have before been made, but always with a .different manner of securing the cap to the plete; that is toY say, the manner of securingthe cap was apparent from the outside, and the cap hinged to 'the'plxte vby a rivet, 'as see the patent of A. B. Bailey, October 14, 1862, which adds much to the cost of manufacture. .Bymy improvement the use of the rivet ig: lentirely dispensed .with and the security positive and concealed. i Y
I do not therefore broadly claim au ornamental detached cap for coiin screws, but 'having thus fully described my invention, what I do claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' lheY csp F provided with a. tongue, N, so les to bel secured to theiplsteA, substntially in the manner and forl the purpose herein setiforth.
vPURMER'IJ BRADFORD.
