TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: 5
Beit known that we, ROBERT JENNINGS and JAMES A. MARSHALL, of Bordentown, in the countyof Burlin, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Device to Prevent Horses from Cribbi-ng; an do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had t accompanying drawings, forming port of this specification.
The nature of our invention has for its object a. device to prevent horses from indulging in thehal disease of what is termed cribbing. It' consists of two pieces of steel spring of suitable length, both ina. the form of an arc of a circle, one ivithin the other. The outer spring has a shorter or sinnllerldiameter the inner one. In the outsidespring are secured several sharp points that'projcet to neu-r the inside spring. inside spring is provided with a slot or mortise, through which these points project when the inner spri pressed down.
To enable others skilled in the art to Ln and operation. Y
i Figure 1, e plan view of our device.
Figure 2 is a. side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a. sectional view from the line :l: x.
Letters of like name and kind indicate like parts in .each of the figures.
A represents a spring, made of steel of suitable width and'length, in the form of en arc ot'e circle the middle of this spring A are three or more steel points a'a a firmly secured, which project out from the i surface of the spring to u proper distance. At one end ofthe spring A is secured, by means of a. pivot, e, an steel spring, B, of the same Width as the spring A, but of greater diameter, so that the inside of the s1 do not come together, as o. space is left between them, in the form'of a. crescent, and the space in Whi( points a al a occupy. At one end of the inside or shield spring B is a, slot, z', 'that Works over a. button, n the middle of' the inside spring is also another slot, m, through which the points project when the inside spr is pressed down. The ends of the outside spring A ure perforated, so that the whole device can be secu' the throat-latch of the bridle or halter.l It is secured so as to come upon the inside of the throat-latch diefely over thc wind-pipe, so that as the horse begins to crib the wind-pipe expands in such n. manner as to p1 the inside shield spring B, which causes the points a to protrude through the slot m iu the spring B, and the throat of the animal, when it will immediately desist any further attempt to crib. The habit or dise cribbing isvcry detrimental and injurious to a horse, as it causes many to neglect their food, and has a. tendency to cmnciate and debilitate the animal. Our invention is a certin preventive to this injurious hz -diseusc that is .so common among`thc finest horses. I
Having th'us described our invention, 'what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. The spring A, provided with the points a a a, to prevent horses cribbing, substantially as herein des :ind for ille purposes set forth.
2. We claim the inside shielding spring B, in combination with' the spring A, substantially as sho described, und For the` purposes set forth. i
alie und use our invention, we will proceed to describeits constru ROBERT' JENNINGS, JAMES A. MARSHAL] Witnesscsz DAVID Loma, L. Bierens.
