T ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN: l
Be it known that I, EDMUND D. CROSLEY, of Scott, in the county of Cortland, and'Stato of New York, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Washing Machines; and I d hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the construction und operation of the-seme, reference being had to the` nnexeddrnwing's, making a: .part of this specicetion, in vh-ich a'perspective view of the improvement is repre-l sented.
avav represent the box or receptacle in which the material to be Washed is placed, and made slightly oblong .end'nring at the sides. .This box has a, conca-ve bottom, and the sides g y are ribbed laterally. Across the top of the box, from end to end, is a. support or bar d', from`which. are suspended the beaters b b. These beaters are much the brondest'at thc-bottom, theirends smooth. and vertical, but their sides ribbed horizontally and oonvergiug or wedgefshaped, and swinging/loosely on the bnr d, fromV side to side of thebox. From the upperl ends of the handles of these beaters, crank-rods c c connect with the crank z'uupon opposite sides, which is driven by coggefl wheels c. On turning thehandle or crankV u, the beaters movc in opposite directions, one beating the cloth and falling beek as the other comes forward. The sides of the box being' ribbed, and the booter being brodest :it the hottom, and swinging from the `ber d as avcentrc, the clothis ,given an upwardfmotion as the beater swings up to the side of the box, and as it falls hack, the cloth heing'bunched :mdinclining upon the beater, follows it; ind also,'thc cloth, being pressed in the form -oi' n' Wedge, the heaviest partfuppcrmost, falls over ns the benter'reccdes, or rolls partly overl toward the contre of the box, and as the same process is being constantly repeated, thecloth is kept rolling over and over as itis beaten.
I claim the combina-tionof the beaters m,v m, when pivo'ted upon the central bar and connected to the pitman cranks'by the jointed-*arms c c, al1-us described, and for the purpose set forth.
' EDMUND D. CROSLEY.
