SAMUEL G. PIPER, OF LYN N, MASSACHUSETTS. Letters Patent No. 60,054, 'dated Npuember 27, 1866; antedated November 22, 1866.
SPECIFICATION.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
,Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. PIPER, of Lynn, in the county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful or improved Air-Heating Apparatus for Stores; and do hereby declare the-same to be fully described in the following speeifieatioma'nd represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a cooking stove, with my invention applied to it.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same. I l
In the said drawings, A represents a cooking stove of any ordinary kind, having one ormorefopenings, a, i l
in its top for the reception of one or more boilers, or pans, for heating or steaming articles to be cooked. Bis a hollow base, or vessel, made with a bottom, d, and'to fit upon or into and be supported by one of the said boiler openings. From the said vessel, 13, a pipe orhollow column, C, ascends to the ceiling of the apartment and opens into the case D, of a register, E, such register and its case being arranged in the floor of the apartment next above the one in which the stovemay be placed. There is an air-hole or passage, 6, made in the lower part of the pipe, Chsuch hole having a cover, or damper, c, dul'y applied to it.
The purpose of my invention is to heat the apartment over that in which the stove may be situated, and i this will be accomplished by the heat of the fire in the stove being directed against the bottom, d, of the vessel, B; for on such being heated, it will cause a rarefaction of air within the pipe, C, to take place. The air so rarefied will pass up through the receiver, and cooler air will enter the pipe through the passage, 6, which in turn being heated will rise up and pass through the register. The amount of heat which'canibe introduced into an apartment by this simple apparatus is much greater than most persons would imagine. In thiswayjthe waste Heat of the fuel of a; stove, or that not wanted for cooking purposes, may be utilized or employed for warming a room. I do not, claim the combination of an air-conduit, and a register applied to one extremity of it, but- I claim as my invention the combination and arrangement of the vessel B and the air-conduit C, provided with an air-receiving passage 15, and a register arranged with respect to it as described, the whole being for application, as explained, to a stove and to the floor of an apartment over that in which the stove may be situated.
s. e. PIPER.
