Description
@with gisten stcnt l @fittasi CHARLES EDDY, orl GRASS LAKE, MICHIGAN."
Letters Patent No. 60,866, dated January 1, 1867.

To ALL wHoM IT MAY ooNoERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES EDDY, of Grass Lake, in the countyA of Jackson, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and improved Sca'old Bracket; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and' exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a bracket designed for sca'olds in shingling or roofing buildings, and consists more particularly in forming from a bar of 'iron of proper size a fork or arms, upon the ends of which are spurs turned at right angles with the barv that is intended to pass a short distance under the buts of the shingles and inserted therein. The baris turned at right angles, one of which rests upon the roof, so that it forms a bracket ready to lay on the foot-boards.
To enable 'others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describe its construction and operation. i i
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved bracket in position upon a roof.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same. v
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A is a Hat bar of iron or other suitable metal, provided with two arms, B B; At the ends of the said arms B B are spurs, a a, that are passed up under the buts of the shingles, which spring down on the 4spurs a a, and have a tendency to hold the bracket in its place. 4The lower end of the bar -A is bent or turned up at right angles, as seen at C, against which the board is placed for the purpose of supporting the feet of the workman while rooiing the building; also the shingles or othenmaterial used for the purpose of roofing. At the elbow, orat the angle where the bar A is bent, are provided spurs, e e, which are driven into the roof,D, for the purpose of holding the bracket more firm in its place to give greater security to the workman. F is the slcaold board, shown in position for the workman. It will be observed that any number of'these brackets may be used, enough so that perfect satety may be insured, when the boards will be placed from one to another of the brackets as they are placed in'position across the roof, as seen in the drawings, which makes one of the cheapest and safest scaifolds used for rooting.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters -Patent, is- The bar A, provided with the arms B B, the said arms being provided with spurs a a and e e, either or both, for the purposes, and substantially as shown and described.
The above specification f my lnvention signed by me this day of ,'1866.
' I CHARLES EDDY.
