Letters Patent No. 60,672, dated January 1, 1867.-
IMPROVED PROCESS FOR GLAZING PAPER.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK BEGK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Process for Glazing Paper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled'in the art to make and use the same.
' This invention consists in treating paper with stearic acid, by applying the acid to it and then exposing it to the action of friction surfaces in such a manner that the surface of the paper is coated with a thin layer of said acid, imparting to it a fine gloss, and rendering it soft, white, and impervious to water. The stearic acid which I use in carrying out my invention is of that kind which is generally used in the manufacture of candles known'as adamantine candles. Of this acid I spread a small quantity over the surface of the paper, and pass said paper through between friction-rollers of that class generally used in polishing fancy papers; or, simple polishing stones, or other friction surfaces, may be used to produce the 'desired effect. By the friction the stearic acid is spread in a thin, even layer over the surface'of the paper, rendering said paper impervious to water, and imparting to it a soft and glossy appearance. This process is applicable particularly to paper intended for paper collars, because it renders the paper sweat proof and capable of being washed, and gives it a coat which is not deleterious to the health, and which has a soft feeling. The same process may, however, be applied to fancy papers and wall papers. Instead of stearic acid, parafline may be used, either pure or prepared; and by using my process 'in the manufacture of white paper, the application of color is'dispensed with, and consequently no color can come off.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-1 The within-described process of treating paper with stearic acid, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
