Be it known that I, ABNER'G. BEVIN, of Ghatham, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Connecticut have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sleigh 'Bells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical section, taken through the centre of a sleigh bell.

The object of this invention is to so construct the rivet by which the bell is secured to the leather that the same will at once effectively hold thebell to the leather, and also prevent the bell from turning, and to-so construct the whole that it will be cheap and simple, and easily made.

The invention consists in providing the rivet with two lugs, provided with knife edges, which will cut into the leather, and consequently prevent the rivet from turning in the leather. For the latter purpose lugs were heretofore attached to the bell itself, but theyhad to be large, and injured the leather, besides preventing the application ofa small washer between the bell and leather, thereby injuring the general appearance of the bell. My invention overcomes this objection, as the lugs on the rivet do not come in contact with the bell, and a small washermay consequently be interposed between the bell and the washer; the lugs are also very small, and do not injure the leather, and being provided with knife edges they cut the leather while being attached, while formerly the necessary holesfor the lugs had to be punched into the leather with great accuracy before the bells could be fastened; as the-construction of all parts of my bell is, furthermore, a very simple one, it will be easy to manufacture the same, whereby a cheap article is obtained.

The rivet Ais provided with two lugs, a, which rest onthe head of the rivet, as seen in figs. 1 and 2. The lugs are provided with knife edges, as seen in fig. 3, so thatthey will, when the rivet is applied to the leather} strap, B, cut into the leather and prevent the rivet from turning. After the washer, b, is placed over the rivet", the bell, C, is secured to the latter in the usual manner.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The sharp-edged lugs (1 extending from the sides of the shank A, and resting on the head of the ivet to the other end of which the bell issecured, and adapted to cut into the leather and prevent the turning o the rivet,. as and for the purpose specified.
