IMPROVEMENT- IN 'GHUBNS, BEER. GOOLERS, dtc.
GU12 tlgehulr Infant in in fi m-writers 33mm mt mating putt M figs Wilt.
Be it known that I, S. S. ELDER, of Springfield, in the county of Sangamon, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ghurns, (also adaptable for use as a cooler for beer, &cl,) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view.
-Figure 2 is a horizontal section.
Figure 3 is a vertical section.
In theseveral figures I have employed the same letters in the designation-of identical parts.
The nature of my improvement will appear from the following description, and its extentJwill he set forth in the claim, whichwill be confined to the peculiar combination of parts adopted in my arrangement, I being aware that churns are quite common in which two sets of dashers are made to revolve at the. same time in opposite directions. .v
. A'is the body of the churn, which I make hexagonal, the staves being secured by hoops as shown. This form of the body assists in the agitation of the fluids exposed to the action of the revolving dashers. Thedashers are driven'by the crown-wheel B, on the back of which is placed the handle B Q'aud on the face the gearing B, which work' into the spur-wheels C and D, placed'above and. below. These spur-wheels will revolve in opposite directions by the. action of the crown-wheel. The spur-wheel C is keyed to the vertical shaft F, which revolves in suitable boxes on. or inthe frame E, at E and El". The crown-wheel turns upon a'stud the base of which is attached to the brace E of the frame E.. The shaft F has its lower extremity finished with a flat blade similar to the point of a screw-driver which fits into a slot cut across the upper end of the shaft, F", which runs upon a suitable step constructed in thecentre of the floor of the case A. The spur-wheel D, has a collar, D, extending down below the top of the casing A, where it has projecting lugs, to which are fastened the slightly inclined arms of :the dasher D". The vertical floats are connected with corresponding nearly horizontal arms below fastened to corresponding lugs upon the collar D. 'The collars D and D',-embrace the shaft F, which turns freely within them while they, with the arms 1)" of thedasher, revolve in the opposite direction. is a hollow cylindrical shaft surrounding the shaft F, between the collars D and D it is fastened to the shaft F", and revolves with it, giving motion to the horizontally projecting dashers G. When the crown-wheel is turned by the crank-pin B, the dashers D and G, are driven with an accelerated speed in opposite directions, and in conjunction with theangles of the hexagonal case violently agitate the fiuid operated upon. 7 I I It will readily appear that the same arrangement of parts adaptable for use in a churn, will equallyanswer the purpose of cooling liquids.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. The combination of the hexangu'lar casing A, and dashers D and G, revolving in opposite directions.
when respectively constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
2. I claim the combination of the dashers D'( and G, when carried in opposite directions upon a system of shafts F F and G, and collars D and D arranged and operated substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth. Y I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
' SAMUEL S. ELDER.
