IMPROVED FRUIT J AR.
JOSEPH BORDEN, OF BRIDGETON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOB' TO T. & J. BODINE, OF SAME PLACE,
Letters Patent No. 60,468, dated December 18, 1866.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY concnnn:
Be it known that I, JosnPH BORDEN, of Bridgeton, Cumberland county, New Jersey, have invented an improvement in PreservingVessels; and I do hereby declare the following to-be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. I
My invention consists of a cover, a set-screw projecting from the under side of the-said. cover, and a crossbar forming a nut for the said screw, and adapted to recesses or projections on the inside of the vessels mouth, the whole forming a simple, cheap, and efi'ective cover for preserving vessels, and on the exterior of which is no prominent projection to interfere with the close packing of a number of vessels together.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and apply my invention, I will now proceed to describe its constrnctionand operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawing, which-forms a part of this specification-'- Fignre 1 is a vertical section of the upper portion of a preserving vessel, with my improvement.
Figure 2, a sectional plan (inverted) on the line 1-2, fig. 1; and
Figure 3, a View ofthe exterior of the upper portion of the vessel.
Similar letters refer to similarparts throughout the several views.
A is thevessel, on the neck, a, of which are two projections, b 6, made by the formation of two recesses, d cl, in the inside of the neck, each recess being in the present instance inclined and commencing at a point, so, near the upper edge of the neck, and terminating at a point, y, fig. 2. B is a cover of thin metal, cast iron, glass, or other material, and has, in the present instance, on its outer edge an annular vertical flange, e, for fitting over the mouth of the vessel. The cover has such an annular indentation, h, that between the latter and the flange, e, there shall be an annular recess on the under side of the cover for the reception of the ring, f, of gum elastic, or other suitable packing material. To the under side of the cover, B,'is secured by soldering or otherwise, a set-screw, D, having threads adapted to internal threads in the cross-bar, E.
In applying the cover to the vessel, the operator holds it in his hand, the eross-barbeiug on the-set-screw, D, and occupying the position shown by dotted lines, fig. 2, in the neck of the vessel; he then turns the cover, and with it the cross-bar, until the latter is arrested by the ends, y y, of the recesses, 01 and cl, when the bar becomes a nut, so that by continuing to turn the cover, the latter will be depressed, and the gu1n-elastic ring, f,
will be compressed between the cover and the edge of the yessel, forming a perfectly tight joint.
In place of the recesses, d and 01', there may be simple projections on the inside of the vesscls neckfor overlapping and retaining the cross-bar, E, and preventing it from being turned beyond a given point.
The cover may be provided on the outside with any desired appliances for operating the said cover, either by hand or by the aid of any suitable instrument.
It will be evident that the cover constructed and applied to the vessel in the manner described is simple, cheap, and effective.
At the same time there are no prominent projections on the outside of the cover to interfere with the close packing of a number of the vessels together.
I do not desire to claim broadly an internal cross-bar for maintaining the cover tight to the mouth of the vessel, but I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The cover B, the set-screw D projecting from the under side of the same, in combination with the cross-bar E, serving as a nut for the said screw, and adapted to recesses or projections in the neck of the vessel, all as set forth. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' JOSEPH BORDEN.
