W. C. LESSTER. Cmbined Ggsalier and Cigar Lighter. N0. 59,617. -;Patented-=Nov. 13, 1866.

WILLIAM G. LESSTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED GASALIER AND ClGAR-LIGHTER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,617, dated November 13, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. LESSTER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combined Gasalier and Cigar-Lighter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents an outside elevation of my improved gasalier and cigar-lighter, and Fig. 2 a vertical section thereof.
Like letters indicate like parts in both fig ures.
My invention consists in a novel combination, with a gasalier, of a burning-fluid or spirit cigar-lighter, the founts or dipping cups of which are arranged around the stems of the gasalier, which is made hollow, so as to contain a fluid or spirit reservoir that supplies the founts; also, in a combination, with the gasalier and cigar-lighter, of a jet-cup for lighting the fluid or spirit dippers, by which combination or combinations an economical, ad vantageous, and at the same time ornamental entirety is produced, embracing in or 011 the one stand both a general light and special lighter for cigars separately controllable or serviceable.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-- A represents the stand, and B the hollow stem, of a gasalier, which may be of any desired style, size, and height, and constructed, as usual, in sections, with a gaspipe, 0, running upwardly through it, connected at its bottom with a branch tube, conveying gas thereto through the counter or support on which the gasalier rests, and terminating at its top either in a single burner, a, or series of burners, after the fashion of a chandelier.
At a suitable'height from the base of the gasalier the stem B is swelled out in shape, so as to form a chamber of sufficient capacity to containa burning-fluid or spirit reservoir, D, through which the gas-pipe 0 passes, though not directly, but through a sleeve, b, in said reservoir, so as to prevent the fluid or spirit in the reservoir from becoming impregnated with any escaping gas, for which reason, and to prevent volatile particles escaping and igniting at the gasalier-burner, it is preferred to make the reservoir a close vessel, communicating with the exterior by means of a branch tube, a, that serves'as a supply-pipe to the reservoir.
Connected with the reservoir D, at or near its lower level, by tubes passing through the stem, are any desired number of founts or dipping-cups, E, furnished with dippers d, the same, in connection with the reservoir, forming a cigar-lighter, the reservoir to which, arranged as described, is concealed from view and protected against accident or injury, while said lighter is not only kept steady by its connection with the gasalier, but a direct facility is afforded for lighting the dippers, which may be done at the burner or burners proper of the gasalier, but preferably by a separate jet issuing from a branch, 0, projecting through the stem from the gaspipe O, and arranged to burn within a jet-cup, F, which jet is controllable by a separate faucet, f, from that which regulates the burner or burners proper of the gasalier, so that the premature or accidental extinction of either light still leaves one burning to relight by or ignite the cigar from.
By thus combining the jet-cup-or its burner with the gasali er, but a short independent tube thereto is required, thus reducing cost and liability to leakage, while the combination of all three devices-that is, the gasalier, cigarlighter, and jet-cupon the one stand or stem constitutes a most advantageous, comparatively economical, and, it may be, ornamental contrivance.
That I claim herein as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a gasalier, of a cigar-lighter the founts of which are supplied with combustible fluid or spirit from a reservoir arranged within the stem of the gasalier, substantially as specified.
2. The arrangement within the stem of the gasalier of a close combustible fluid or spirit reservoir, having the gas-pipe pass through a sleeve in it, and communicating with the exterior by a supply-pipe and fount-tubes, essentially as herein set forth.
3. The combination of the gasalier cigarlighter with its reservoir and jetcup, con structed and arranged substantially as shown and described, and forthe purpose specified.
W. O. LESSTER.
