Description
UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN` CORSET-CLASPS.4
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57.085, dated August 14, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN` W. CARTER, of Greenville,'in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact'description of the same, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention consists in so securing the metallic springs within the corset and the clasps to the springs, as well as in and to the corset, that both the springs and clasps' can be readily detached from each other, and
also from thecorset, when the latter is to'be washed or cleaned in any suitable man ner, the
object being to provide a convenient Inode of' removing the springs from the corset when the latter is to be washed and reinserting them therein without injuring or defacing the corset in the least degree, as will be obvious from the following detail description thereof, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of such portions of the corset as contain the metallic springs and their clasps; Fig. 2, a side view of a portion of'one of the corset-springs, showing more fully the manner in which the clasps are secured thereto; and Fig. 3, an end view of a corset-spring and an edge view of the clasp thereon, such as shown in Fig. 2.
A in the drawings, represents a portion of the corset and such parts of the same as are to receive the metallic springs B, used in the corset, which springs are inclosed within suitable pockets cof the corset, formed bylapping or folding over its edges and then hemming such folded portion to the main body of the corset A 5 D, the clasps, the number of which to be used depends somewhat upon the size of the corset, these clasps being of the usual form and construction, except that, in lieu ot' being riveted to the spring they are made in such a shape with one end, F, formed with a loop, as
firmly upon the springs.
In the edges of the pockets c of the corset for the springs `slits are made at suitable points of their length, according to the positions which the several clasps are to occupy, through which slits the clasps are placed, and across the pockets in proper position for the springs as they are run through the pockets of the corset from their lower end up, to pass through their looped-over portions E, when the pockets, being sewed up at their open ends, the springs and their several clasps are secured in and to the corset, and in such a manner as is obvious that, by simply ripping one end of the pockets for the springs, both their springs and their respective clasps can be withdrawn from the corset, if desired, to wash or cleanse the same, and then reinserted or placed therein,as is manifest, without any further explana tion, the advantages of which are manifest'.
Having thus described Inyinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The armed looped clasp D E F, made in one piece and secured, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 14th day of April, 1866.
JOHN W. CARTER.
