Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.`
OOETLAND BALL'AND J. w'. HOUGHTELIN, OE DETROIT, MIOHTGAN.
plMPROVEMENT IN GRUBBING.MACHI`NES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57.067,(lated August 14, 1866.
To all whom t may concern.:
Be itknowlrthat we, CORTLAND BALL and J. \V. HOUGHTELIN, Of Detroit, inthe county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have inventeda new and Improved Grubbing-Machine 5 `and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use. the same, reference being had tO the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a side sectional view of our invention, taken in the line ma, Fig. 2; Fig.-2, a plan or top view Of the same.
Similar letters Ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved device for eradicating or drawing out stumps, roots, &c. 5 and it consists in having two ratchets and a drum placed on an axle provided with two wheels and having upon it a frame tO which pawls are pivoted tO engage with the ratchets,`the above parts being used in connection with a chain Or clamp, andall arranged as hereinafter fully shown and `described, whereby a very convenient device is obtained for eradicating Or drawing out medium-sized roots, stumps, Ste., and one which may be drawn from place to place and manipulated wit-h the greatest facility.
A represents an axle having two wheels, B
B, placed loosely upon it, 4and G is a drum,
which is keyed ijrmly On the axle about at its center, and has a ratchet, D, secured to each end of it. The periphery of the drum C is provided with projecting pins a at suitable distances apart.
E represents alever-frame, composed of two bars, cda', which are iitted, by means of boxes b, loosely at one end On the axle A, so that they may turn thereon, the Outer Or opposite ends being connected by a rod, c, on which a pulley, F, is tted, the pulley being between said bars, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
G G represent two pawls, which are fitted loosely on a rod, d, between the bars a a', said pawls engaging with the ratchets D D.
H representsa clamp formed of an iron bar bent so as to form three sides of a quadrangle, with hooks e e at the ends of its two opposite sides to engage with the teeth of the ratchets D D. as shown clearly in Fig. 2., This clamp extends over the periphery Oi' the drum C, and the stump or root to be drawn is adjusted between the drum and the outer side or. bar of rthe clamp, the device being so adjusted or placed as to admit Of this, and the lower frame, lil, raised, soV that the clamp may extend sufficiently far out from the periphery ofthe drum to allow Ot' the root Or stump `ittin g between them. By drawing ldown the Outer end ofthe lever-frame the clamp H and drum C will bind against the root or stump, and draw the latter out of the earth, the pawls G Gr, in` consequence Of being engaged` with the ratchets D D, turning the drum, which' raises the clamp and draws out the root or stump.`
In lieu of the clamp H, a chain may be used, the lower end attached to the root or stump, and the upper part fitted on the drum and connected thereto by the pins a.
We would remark that the teeth of the ratchets D D may increase in width from theirinner to their Outer ends, so as to form hooked Or inclined sides, to prevent the contingency ot' the pawls or the clamp slipping out from them; and we would further remark that the leverframe E may be operated directly by hand Or through the medium Of a tackle applied to the pulley F at the outer end of the lever-frame, and that other power than human may be used for operating the device, it' necessary Or desired.
` Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement Of the drum (1,1'atchets D D, lever-frame E, pawls G G, clamp Orchain H H, applied in combination with the axle A of the wheels B, all constructed and Operating in the manner and for the purpose described. GOBTLAND BALL.
J. W. HOUGHTELIN.
