Description
W. W. STILLMAN.
' Plow-:Colter. I
No. 57,007. r Patented Aug. 7, 1866.
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE. p,
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATOR-PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,007, dated August 7, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. WARREN STILL- MAN, of Mount Hawley, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golters for Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents a rolling colter or cutter, being a metallic wheel with its periphery sharpened so as to out the earth or sod when placed upon a plow-beam.
B represents a shaft, made of metal, with its lower end bent and made forked. The cutter A is placed between the forks of this shaft and pivoted through its center to said forks.
0 represents a collar, whichfits over this shaft and which is secured to it permanently, when desired, by means of a thumb or set screw, d.
E represents a clamp, which has formed or east upon one side of it a flange, g, and two arms, e e. By means of this flange, which fits under the plow-beam, and the arms, which rest upon top of it, the said clamp is secured tothe beam by the set'screws cl d, which pass through the arms. A'bulge is cast upon the back of this clamp, through which an opening is made or cast from bottom to top, to receive the shaft B. At the center of this bulge the metal is cut away, from the outside into the opening which is made to receive the shaft B, sufficiently to allow the collar 0 to pass into it, so that when said collar is placed in said opening the shaft B will pass through it, and
it (the collar) will be confined betweeuthe two parts of the bulge.
In using this invention the clamp E is se cured to the plow-beam by means of the flange g, the arms 0 e, and the set-screws a a. The
shaft B is then adjusted to itsproper place I and the screw 01 is turned so as to station the collar G. The collar, when stationed by the screw, prevents the shaft B from working up or down in the opening in the bulge, while at the same time the shaft B is allowed to turn and the Wheel or colter A is allowed to adjust itself under the plow-beam to the direction of the plow, just as a caster-wheel upon articles of furniture.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp The shaft B, the collar 0, and the clamp E, arranged and used substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
As evidence that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnessess.
