UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILO M. GILBERT, or KEWANEE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED PRESS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF SUGAR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,205, dated July 10, 1866; antedated May 3, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, P. M. GILBERT, of Kewanee, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Manufacturing Sugar from Sorghum or other Saccharine Substances; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referen ce marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents the frame of the machine, which consists of two sills of any desired height, placed about two feet apart, and'connected together by strong cross-ties, which are mortised into them. Upon each of the sills is erected a standard, B, the two standards B being connected together near their upper ends by a cross-tie, O. In this cross-tie O is cut a female screw, into which female screw fits a male screw, D. The screw D is provided at its upper extremity with an arm, E, said arm being provided with a bow, M. or any other suitable attachment for applying animalpowerto the said arm.
To 'the lower extremity of the screw D is attached a. metallic head, G. This head is provided with ears (I d, which depend from its periphery, and with a square sleeve, which depends from its center, through which the lower end of the screw passes. These cars 61 and sleeve 6 serve to support the journals of four small caster-wheels, which are seen and marked H H. There is no thread upon that portion of the screw which enters the sleeve 6.
F represents a cylindrical press-box made in a substantial manner and open at both ends, and is provided with suitable feet 8 s to rest upon. This box rests, when the machine is in operation, upon a slide, K, which said slide rests upon the cross-ties of the sills A.
I represents a solid metallic disk, a represents an india-rubber disk, and 0 represents a perforated metallic disk, all of which areplaced in the order here named and shown in the box F, being made to fit snugly in it.
J represents an annular block, which is made to fit also in the box. This block is provided with a hole through its center, and upon its upper face with grooves, which radiate from the center opening toward its periphery. The opening in the block J is directly over an opening in the slide K, so that when thejuice or molasses is pressed out it will fall into the pans L L, which, it will be seen, are placed upon ways made between the sills and under the box F.
In using this machine the sirup or molasses, after being reduced to that state where there are particles of sugar beginning to form in or are formed in it, is placed in this box F, and the disks 0, a, and I are placed upon it, and power is applied by means of the head G and screw D. The sirup or juice is pressed out through the block J and slide K and falls into the pans L. After all the juice is pressed out the slide K is removed and the sugar is pressed out also into a pan and is removed.
This machine can be used with hand-power or by animal-power, as desirable.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- The arrangement of the head Gr, with its rollers H H, the screw D, the press box F, the disks I, a, and 0, block J, slide K, and frame A, for forming a press, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 7
As evidence that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
PHILO M. GILBERT.
Witnesses:
WILLIAM 0. W001), HARVEY DECKER.
